University of Dubuque! I had so much fun getting to know your students and faculty. Sharing the 5 Core Skills of @moral_courage was a highlight. In an increasingly divided world, it’s so important to equip young leaders with communication skills that bridges the gap between our differences. We are all complex human beings just doing our best. Having difficult conversations is love in practice and bravery in motion.

Students… I really appreciate how engaged you all are and all the nuanced questions you asked! Keep asking questions, a curious and skeptical mind is a strong one ☝🏽

I look forward to returning soon! Thank you @universityofdubuque 💕

I think it’s high time @hamiltonpoliceontario told the people of Hamilton who REALLY runs this here show! That said, I must commend my deputy for holding down the fort all this while! Good job, Deputy Bergen! 😎

Tomorrow, I’ll be on a panel @mohawk.college with a group of community leaders discussing @moral_courage, moderated by @realirshadmanji. With Chief Frank Bergen retiring next year, I wonder how many more opportunities we’ll have to share a stage like this!

Our relationship began in a room filled with tension. MUCH TENSION. Over the years, it has grown into something I deeply value. When I left that room at city hall all those years ago, I left with a very different impression than when I went in! In that moment, I knew I could work with this guy! I have thoroughly enjoyed our journey since!

Our exchanges haven’t always been easy, but I deeply value the trust and respect we’ve built, and our commitment to staying in conversation and serving this community.

If you’re up for a real, raw exchange about courage, duty, unity, civic participation and leadership, you need to be with us LIVE! I can’t guarantee another moment like this that’ll be open to the general public! 😁

See you OUTSIDE, Hamilton! ✨

We the people are exhausted by performative outrage. We know how to make statements. What we’ve forgotten is how to make a difference.

That’s where moral courage comes in. Irshad Manji, founder of Moral Courage College, will present a practical toolkit for turning different, even clashing, viewpoints into trust-building opportunities. With trust, there can be collaboration. And with collaboration, there’s meaningful impact.

The moral courage skills that Irshad will teach are actionable right away. Her question for audience members is simple: Do you only want to make a statement or do you also want to make a difference?

All are invited!

Also available for UVA students: an engaged training & certification with Irshad Manji on Saturday, October 17.

🔗 Links for both the keynote event & the student training are in bio.

Day 2 of my Artist In Residence at @westernmichu

As Global Ambassador of @moral_courage - I had the distinct honor of being in conversation with the honorable Dr. Lewis Walker. At 90 years young, he shared openly about his decades long journey as a Civil Rights Activist, Bridge Builder and work in education and justice reform. I had a chance to thank him, on behalf of my generation, for creating more space for us to stand up and speak up. Because of what his generation did during a time where speaking up could and often resulted in death and physical harm, we can be a bit braver and a bit safer while doing the same. Thank you sir.

After our shoot, I was able to chat with the Poetry and Creative Writing honor students in Professor Alen Hamza’s class. We spoke in depth about @peoplenotthings - A Philosophy for the Age of Division. And the raw power of poetry, art, unbridled self expression. They were vulnerable and shared about their fears as creatives, in a culture so quick to dismiss or degrade self expression or even personal opinion for that matter. Overcoming that fear is one of the most powerful things they will learn in their young life, and I’m honored I can play small part in helping them destroy that barrier.

Excited for day 3…

On Monday, I had the honor of delivering a keynote at @methodistuniversity. I taught the 5 Core Skills of @moral_courage after screening our documentary “Mississippi Turning”.

The time I spent with the students, especially the student leadership left me hopeful and excited for the next generation of leaders coming up.

The skill of healthy communication even around difficult topics, is something that will serve you, your entire life. Learning to speak from both confidence and curiousity is a tool most never take the time to sharpen.

I gave you the game, now you just have to practice it and apply it. Find the common ground and build from there. The Industry of Division is alive and well, have the Moral Courage to call it out and call each other in. Stay focused, take care of each other.

I’m at @westernmichu to begin certifying student-athletes as @moral_courage mentors for their peers. This is a first-in-the-nation effort, and it’s happening because one person knows the power of building trusted relationships.

Last year, Jeff Breneman, a University Veep, was in NYC to accept an award. I live in Brooklyn, so he reached out to meet up. The next morning, over Yemeni coffee, we began discussing Western’s student-athletes as mentors for each other, and for undergrads right across campus.

After all, athletes have the social cachet to coach fellow undergrads. Why not leverage their cachet to teach the skills for mental wellness?

Jeff immediately got to work engaging leaders in the athletics department, the business school, the education and fine arts colleges, the first-year program, even the libraries.

It wasn’t totally smooth sailing. I remember a phone call where Jeff and I agreed to press forward despite a major setback.

That’s why earning trust beforehand is key to doing innovative things: when stuff goes sideways, you have faith in each other to work through it.

We did. And here we are (along with the Dean of Students and a couple of undergrads), flashing the Western “W.” Go #BroncoNation!

A young Arab souvenir seller in Jerusalem schooled me in how to advocate for major change. He smoked out how ineptly I’d been arguing for reform among my fellow Muslims. Why did they get so defensive? Why did I get so defensive about their defensiveness?

In short, why didn’t we trust each other?

Souvenir Guy made it all make sense. And he helped transform how I operate as a change agent. Maybe he can do the same for you?

Catch the story on my Substack. Link in bio. Thanks to @hdxacademy for first publishing this quirky piece.

Every day, people play win/lose games with each other. Problem is, those games also play us. The cost? Anxiety and exhaustion.

Introducing Western's Game Changer program, a collaborative initiative between WMU, WMU Kalamazoo Promise Scholars Program and Western Michigan University Athletics. 💫

The program uses the @moral_courage skill set, developed by @realirshadmanji, which transforms heated issues into opportunities for trust-building and genuine connection. The result? Better mental health and a sense of belonging.

Upper-class Broncos will get trained in the human-to-human skills that AI just can't replicate. Trainees can even be certified as Moral Courage Mentors, then guide small groups of incoming first-year students throughout the year.

With student athletes leading the way, this is a first-in-the-nation opportunity. Learn more and sign up to change the game at the link in our bio.

This week, two neighboring (er, neighbouring with a “u”) countries celebrate their independence. One of them is Canada, where I grew up. It’s a nation known for its humility. The other is the United States, where I’ve lived for 20 years. It’s an entity known for its confidence.

As a dual citizen, I think I’ve got the standing to say this: Today, Canada has far more reasons to be confident than America does. And America? It has more reasons than ever to be humble.

But choosing between confidence and humility is lapsing into a false binary. Americans and Canadians would be better off combining confidence and humility into “confident humility,” a way of transforming win/lose into learn-learn.

Top-performing athletes know the value of confident humility. Can countries, too? That depends on individual citizens — like you and me.

🇨🇦 Wishing you (and me) a healthy #CanadaDay and #FourthOfJuly! 🇺🇸
