@woawgallery extended the originally planned duration of Objecting Reality exhibition that I curated at their Wan Chai space. So, if you find yourself if Hong Kong before May 13th, perhaps treat your peepers with this presentation in person.

Featuring works by @ginnycaseypompi @wedharriyadi @jenniferannecar @morbidmediocrity @niklasasker @__damien_meade__ @filip_mirazovic @quinteningelaere @suzukihidetaka and @heesookim_, the exhibition focuses on painting’s sorcerous ability to transcend its two-dimensional boundaries and achieve three-dimensional, sculptural illusion. And today, I wanted to share some moments from our opening night back in March…

Today in Hong Kong (Wed 27th from 6-10pm), we’ll be presenting Objecting Reality, that I got to curate at @woawgallery in Wan Chai! Im exceptionally proud of this show as it wasn’t an easy task to put it together in a way I envisioned it but the WOAW team did their magic once again.

As seen by these images, the idea of the show is to present the works that accentuate painting’s capability to petrify anything into a still image while simultaneously breathing life into mere canvas and pigment. This alchemical transformation converts the organic medium applied to a flat surface into an illusion of a lifeless object within a three-dimensional scene. And both the examples of works included as well as the way they are presented, emphasize the weight of the portrayed, inanimate objects.

This feels like a quiet before the storm that I’m looking forward to. Quiet being the weekend, storm being the Art Basel week in Hong Kong, and part that Im looking forward to being the show that I curated there at @woawgallery. On Wed, March 27th, we’ll be presenting Objecting Reality, a group show featuring painters that are capable of summoning the very essence of sculpted forms on a flat canvas, creating a theatrical world where light and shadow gracefully dance across rigid subjects.

I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t nervous about presenting an exhibition in the art-wise hottest week of the year. I got to do that a few years ago in Miami, and somehow this show in Hong Kong feels even more special. The reason for that is likely the ambitious way we are presenting this exhibition, which is meant to emphasize the idea behind the works - presenting painting’s capability to petrify anything into a still image while simultaneously breathing life into mere canvas and pigment. The team installed the show the other day (here are some photos from the install), and to see it turning out exactly as I envisioned it was such a relief and delight! I’m not gonna say much more about it for now, but I can promise you two things - a great selection of paintings and an exciting, unusual way of experiencing them.
