9/19 Was Historic. Those who were there to witness, can attest to it, the night was not just another concert; it was an opportunity to experience the transformative quality that music at its highest realm can provide: a spiritual experience.

It’s a momentary thing, that of sand and wind but if you catch it it’s pure unadulterated Magic.

The lyrics of the songs told stories of love, longing, politics, injustice, heritage and the beauty of life's simple pleasures. The instruments rattled, beat and sung of a cultural lineage baptized in the sounds of African and Pre-Hispanic expression. There was tradition, there was community and an emanating pulse that moved us in unison.

I saw tears well up in the eyes of those who missed their country and could for a moment feel it beating strong in their hearts, I saw smiles that lit up the faces of those lost in the sheer joy of music. I saw young and old, and all the distinguished features and colors of humanity.

It was a night where the past and the present danced hand in hand, where cultures converged, and where the music of Cumbia wove a tapestry of memories that would linger in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to live it.

Thank you con todo Corazon to the light bearers of Cumbia: Los Gaiteros de San Jacinto.
Thank you Folk Art Rare Records, La Diabla, Mitchum Yacoub and Mafondo. Thank you to Harri and Mo who taught me how to host true convivios and made a makeshift hotel for Los Gaiteros in their home. Thank you Laura for the support, nourishment and for being Don Rafas chaperone. Thank you Kiel who without you renting a car and picking Los Gaiteros up in LA we wouldn’t of had a show. Thank you Jason and Esteban for all your work at the bar. Thank you Bryan for your commitment to the sound. Thank you Nancy, Israel and David for capturing the moment with film and photography. Thank you Carolina for holding down the door. And thank you to our Sponsors: Dos Hombres, Patron, Pabst Blue Ribbon, Topo Chico, Campari, and True Proof
