While I was on active duty I really bucked against the social expectations of service. I made some of the greatest friendships of my life but simultaneously struggled with carving a space for myself in a sea of men so different from me.

Though I had a complicated relationship with the military, when I left it felt like the rug was pulled out from underneath me.

When I finally stepped away from the social safety net of defaulting to hanging with whoever was in my command, I found deep and isolating cracks in what I had always thought was my natural, outgoing, and gregarious foundation.

Moving to Boulder alone to launch a new career was not outside something I would attempt but my normal military social cushion had me really underestimate just how difficult that transition would be. It took so much more of myself to even try and engage with the outside world than I would have thought. I self described this space as my little hole where I had come to hide away and heal from the last decade of service.

I really did prove to myself what it takes to build organic, lasting, and worthwhile community from the ground up. I talk a lot about how much I care for this country, and that care has always began with my immediate circle. I truly believe in the reciprocal energy we can provide one another if we lead with empathy, vulnerability, and compassion.

So though I am endlessly grateful for the family the military provided me. I am that much more proud of the community I have built outside of that organization. These people have shown me so much grace in my growth, have reignited my creativity, shown me what love looks like, given me examples of what I aspire to be for others, welcomed my renewed sense of self with no judgement and so much care, and truly championed my wildest and most authentic self discovery.

I have been forever changed by each of them and I am so proud of the people they are not only to me but for our whole community. I’m so grateful to know what it feels like to be amongst people who no longer make me question my sense of belonging. I am so excited to keep building these communities wherever I go.
