The Outer Veil & The ARCH-HIVE Present: 𝑀𝑂𝑅𝑀𝐴𝑁𝐼𝑇𝑌 An eclectic showcase of the breadths & depths of contemporary Mormon art. Mormanity is our inaugural art show at @the.outer.veil. It is a “thesis statement” of sorts of the type of work we plan to show at the gallery: profound and sincere explorations of Mormonism that push boundaries in terms of medium, style, imagery, or subject matter. We are delighted to show a wide variety of work by these incredible artists: @eduardo.alvarez.art @lisavalkyrie @coreyegbertart @tylergathro_studio @danielgeorgephoto @__scribes__ @karadawnhurst @briankershisnik @mormcore @thread_light_district @camilla.stark.art @trvart The show’s opening coincides with the gallery’s grand opening (see our previous post!), and will be on view through the end of October. SEE YOU SOON AT THE OUTER VEIL

Illness, surgery, hospitalizations, and even a death tried to prevent @roozden_scoot, @barrettburgin, @mormcore, @zachcolliernoise and I from presenting at the Mormon History Association conference last month, but we made it happen. Our presentation was titled “If You Know, You Know: Sacred Subtext in Contemporary Mormon Art”. We each presented on how modern LDS artists, filmmakers, musicians, and even video game designers are creating work that deliberately includes multiple levels of understanding that are only revealed based on the knowledge of the consumer. Somehow we failed to all get a group photo. It was a wonderful weekend spent learning and making connections in the community. We were excited to find out that the conference next year will be in Provo! Boy oh boy do we have a gallery for you to come and see.

Incredibly honored to have JAVA JIVE win the @mormonletters short film award for works done in 2025. This is The Association for Mormon Letter’s 50th year as an organization. It was founded with the specific purpose of fostering the production and study of quality creative work within our community, across many fields including literature, poetry, plays, and film. It tends to be both risky and gratifying when fellow members of a minority community engage with your work, especially when the central focus of the piece is a comment on cultural shame. Really grateful for their flattering (and fittingly coy) citation. Also humbled to have our work included in two other AML nominations for the @centerforldsarts—Mason Kamana Allred’s essay “The Body is the Message: The Promise of Mormon Horror”, which examines THE ANGEL, and The Center’s Advent Calendar, which featured a short story by @barrettburgin.

We’re very excited to share that JAVA JIVE will play in the @fingerlakesfilmfestival on Saturday, Feb 28, in Upstate New York (where our character’s troubles all started). We’re also especially honored that Tim Banach, Deputy Director for the Rochester / Finger Lakes Film Commission took the time to write us a beautiful review, some of which we’ve included in this post. We are excited to be returning to Utah with our absurdist romantic comedy short, JAVA JIVE, which will play New Year’s Day at @theutahfilmfestival! This story is rooted in the strange, shame-tinged experience of growing up as a religious minority in a culture that doesn’t particularly care for you. Ironically, we aren’t sure it’ll screen anywhere BUT Utah. 😂 Guess that remains to be seen… Nonetheless, we’re excited to be back! Join us on Jan 1 at 1:00PM MT for the block titled “Unexpected Companions” at the @midvalleyperformingartscenter in Taylorsville, UT to see our film on the big screen. THE ANGEL will play in the aptly named @eeriehorrorfest, which takes place October 10-11 in Erie, PA. Incidentally, this festival is less than an hour away from Kirtland, OH, where much of the religious lore our film examines was developed. We will screen as part of the “Twisted Family Values” block at 1:50 PM on Saturday, October 11th, in the Warner Theatre Rehearsal Hall. Passes can be purchased from their website.
