Last 🐢 post from our fun turtle week. We pulled out our Reptiles unit from @gatherroundhomeschool as well and learned about the different turtles featured in that unit (we decided to save sea turtles for a bigger ocean theme we hope to do in the future, but we covered the rest). 🐢🍲 We made mock turtle soup (it was good!) No turtles were harmed in the making of this soup (we used beef). We began our Pets unit & vet science study towards the end of last year with the intention of carrying it through the summer, however we decide to take the summer off (usually year round homeschoolers here 👋). So we are continuing on this year with the rest of the Pets unit we have left (I still have a few animals we did do that I need to share about sometime.) This week it’s turtles! 🐢🐢 All tortoises are turtles, but not all turtles are tortoises. A particularly special lesson for us as we have 2 sulcata tortoises! I’ve collected turtle decor (and some fun vtg finds)since getting Oleson & Wilder so some of it was used in our lessons 😂. Plus, a friend informed us that Aldi has turtle “goldfish” crackers recently so we had to find those of course! 📗We enjoyed the Pets unit lesson on turtles from @gatherroundhomeschool as well as resources from @fortheloveofhomeschooling, books videos, recipes, hands on activities & more. We especially loved learning about the story of real life friends Owen & Mzee (tortoise and hippo!) We also pulled several lessons from @gatherroundhomeschool ‘s reptiles and ocean units that featured turtles. Our own Oleson🐢 & Wilder🐢 joined us in the schoolroom for our tortoise specific study (upcoming post) and we thoroughly enjoyed learning about all the different types of turtles and their distinct differences. Ever since I started prioritizing morning baskets again, our mornings have felt calmer, more predictable, and full of more connection. 🤍 Less screens, more learning through play. Some days we spend 10 minutes with our basket, other days it’s 40. Either way, having a few things ready to grab means I’m not reaching for the remote just to keep my toddler busy first thing in the morning. It’s such a simple little routine, but it makes our mornings feel so much easier. We’ve got our usual crafts, morning basket printables, and some new spring-themed printables from @morningstogether, plus lots of books we’ll be rotating through. We added a Filipino book for some language exposure, yoga books, interactive books, spring reads, and our English + Tagalog word flashcards. A few other favourites are her new whiteboard markers, a new @dittybirdbooks book for learning colours, and the same @yotoplay cards we’ve been loving: My First Shapes, Colours & Opposites. I am so grateful each day for the opportunity to homeschool G in this season of life. Part of my gratitude includes the flexibility to learn anywhere. While we aren’t going intense, I needed to bring some of our favorite resources to maintain a level of routine for both of us. We had a fun lesson this morning beginning with our morning menus from @morningstogether. We always do a morning affirmation and this set from @hippiehooray and @granomontessori is so perfect for being at the beach! We moved onto a new read aloud to help G with her nerves of the ocean and talked about how the main character felt throughout the story and how it compared to her. We used our dry erasables and stand from @awandco to write down our ideas. Moving to a bit of math review, we loved integrating our dry erasables again, and added some pretty resin from @quadplayandco along with our mini shell counters from @cureightedco. We put them in our sea glass mix from @creativeplaymama to add an extra touch! Lastly, we had to bring along the best dough from @peaceofplaydoughshop! It matches the sand perfectly and we had fun stamping and doing a sea life stamp match with our pieces from @quadplayandco. We had fun connecting together through learning this morning!
