On November 25, I will be at the Acorn Theatre in Penzance in Cornwell on behalf of the Morrab Library to give the John Le Carre memorial lecture. It’s a great Honor and I’m looking forward to sharing my stories of working with David Cornwell and how our relationship developed over the years. I’ll be sharing private correspondence and perhaps some insights on this great writer and great man.

The inimitable @judy.chicago photographed by Serena Wadham

Judy was photographed by Serena on two separate occasions. The first was taken possibly in the 60s and the second in 1985. This more recent photoshoot was used in the press to promote THE DINNER PARTY, a monumental feminist artwork created by Judy Chicago to honour the women omitted from mainstream history. It was shown at The Warehouse in Islington, 1985.

It consists of a large, triangular table with 39 elaborate place settings, each dedicated to a mythical or historical female figure, alongside the names of 999 other notable women inscribed on its tiled base. The piece was crafted through a massive collaborative effort, utilizing traditional, historically marginalized domestic arts like intricate embroidery, needlework, and hand-painted ceramic plates resembling vulvar and butterfly forms.

Now London’s Frieze Week is over, where some of Judy’s works were exhibited, it’s fascinating to look back at the art that has shaped and is still shaping culture as we know it today.

The Morrab Library tour is always a Reading Party highlight. Here's a little reel from today's visit.
For those of you who don't know it, The Morrab is just one of around 60 subscription libraries remaining in the UK and the only one in Cornwall. It was founded in 1818 and is situated in The Morrab Gardens in the heart of Penzance. There's a free tour on Friday afternoons at 2pm so if you're in Penzance do pop in. It's fascinating.

A few snaps from today's visit to The Morrab Library.
Founded in 1818, it's the only independent library in Cornwall and one of just 60 remaining in the UK.
It has a fascinating history and since 1889 has been located in a former private house in Penzance's Morrab Gardens. You can still see echoes of its past life in the room layout, the old wallpaper behind the bookcases and the fixtures and fittings.
Huge thanks to librarian Lisa for showing the Reading Party ladies around today and giving us all such a warm welcome.

Dawn French closed the LitFest in glorious style last night - good things happen to those that wait!
Penzance LitFest audiences love an autumnal bookish event ❤️

A conversation with Michael Grandage was Enough (the title of her latest novel) for a full house filled with laughter - and some secrets (wonder what Dawn’s filming next….). Thank you to Dawn who signed our books, made us laugh and gave us a deliciously bookish evening at the Acorn.

Dawn is Patron for the Morrab Library and encouraged everyone to grab a ticket for the 2026 John le Carré Memorial Lecture delivered by Jonny Geller (Jonny Geller was John le Carre’s literary agent) - tickets via the Acorn website and a link in our bio.

The current Reading Party gang has been in Penzance enjoying a tour of the glorious Morrab Library.

Founded in 1818, The Morrab is one of just 60 independent subscription libraries remaining in the UK and the only one in Cornwall. It has a fascinating history which actually begins far earlier, in the 1770s, with the foundation of the Penzance Ladies' Book Club. I've written about it in more depth on Substack in a post called A Booklover's Guide to Penzance (link in Bio) but if you're in town, you can learn more on one of the free tours that runs every Friday at 2pm.

‘THE QUEEN ELIZABETH HALL and the evolution of electronic music’

‘On the evening of Monday 15 January 1968 parts of the UK were being battered by high winds, part of a terrible storm.

But the awful weather wasn’t enough to keep crowds away from Queen Elizabeth Hall, where the First London Concert of Electronic Music by British Composers was about to take place.

The concert was a sell out and hundreds of people missed out on getting tickets. The first work on the much anticipated bill is Potpourri by Delia Darbyshire, famous for her involvement with BBC’s Radiophonic Workshop and of course, as the composer of the iconic Doctor Who theme music.

Also in store for the audience are works by Tristram Cary and Peter Zinovieff. The latter premieres his work Partita for Unattended Computer. As the name suggests, there are no performers involved in its recital, just a teletype paper tape reader, sound producing equipment and the computer.’

Serena photographed the transport of the computer to the Queen Elizabeth Hall, the setting up, and the hoards of people arriving.

The storm didn’t deter the crowds who wait patiently on the stairs. Apparently Paul Mcartney was among them.
