Big critters, small critters, fuzzy critters, slimy critters. We love them all and they’re all important. Here’s to another year of critters maxing. 🦎🐛🕷️🦋🐸🐔🐱

They say kids are expensive. What they don’t tell you is what makes them expensive. Well I’m here to tell you, its berries! 🫐🍓

A child between the ages of 1 and 5 can eat over half of their body weight in berries in a single sitting. Scientists still haven’t been able to figure out how they manage it.

About a year ago I realized how many berries our kids eat in a week. I watched as our daughter gorged herself of a carton of blueberries like she was a grizzly bear preparing for hibernation. I knew something had to be done. So I did what I always doing when I come up against a problem in life… I went to the plant store.

Well here we are a year later and these four bushes are putting out an impressive crop, and boy are they delicious! It’s not quite enough to keep my two Berry eating monsters at bay, but it’s a start. 🐻

I’m already planning where to plant more bushes. Edible landscapes are the best and our kids agree. 🫐

“Can we go outside and paint?” 🧑🏼‍🎨
“Of course we can!” 👨🏻‍🌾

I am so in love with the life we have built, and the current speed we go. Slow weekends at home with the kids is the perfect recharge. It’s everything I’ve wanted.

The Chef is always right! 🧑🏼‍🍳

Here’s a fun tip I was reminded of while pulling weeds. Work doesn’t always have to feel like work, it can be fun too. Make a game out of it! Involving the kids in the daily chores almost always guarantees this happens and I love it!

It’s easy to get the kids involved in yard work as long as there’s mud involved. If you are struggling to find a way to make a chore fun then just let them use their imagination and follow their lead. Even if it doesn’t all get completed don’t stress it, at least your outside and with your kids.

POV: Your head is down in a garden bed focused on weeds, and then you look up at the show. What a blessing life is. Look beyond the weeds.

Today has been a more difficult day than normal. Nothing terrible, just one of those nights where I was glancing at the clock every five minutes counting down till bedtime. Which I hate doing, I don’t like feeling that way. I always try to give it my all when I’m spending time with my kids. But honestly the kids are a lot sometimes, and today was one of those days.

We finally got the kids down for bed and I decided to use the last half hour of sunshine to work on a garden bed I have been neglecting. A few minutes into pulling weeds and I finally looked up to see this amazing sunset.

There’s a lesson in here. Something along the lines of— if you spend too much time focusing on things that “need” to get done, you’ll miss out on a lot of beauty along the way. Enjoy the ride. Gardening is much like parenting in many ways. Look beyond the weeds.

Todays catch of the day is a first for me. I have seen plenty of turtles before but I’ve never caught a baby one! So exciting to see this little guy in the pond next to our home.

The kids were both so excited and just wanted to stare at the turtle all day, so I decided to make a little terrarium to keep him in for a few hours. Fostering a love of animals and nature is honestly my favorite part of being a parent. Kids have such a wonderful outlook on life. Their sense of awe and fascination with everything in life is chicken soup for the soul. Every day is an adventure.

I would love to take credit for catching this gorgeous jumping spider, but it was 100% Finn. (Don’t worry he knows which spiders bite and which ones don’t)

These little guys are so curious and friendly. I had to stop filming so I could get him off of me and back into the garden. What an awesome find!

I think my favorite part of this video was Eleanor’s gasp of delight when she saw the spider. She loves bugs and other critters just as much as her brother. Still working on the whole “hold it without squishing it” thing with her, so we don’t let her hold the more delicate critters.

One of my favorite things to do on a slow Saturday morning is walk around the house, coffee in hand, and admire the miniature worlds my kids created throughout the week.

Haley is normally in the kitchen making breakfast and has jazz playing, which really adds to the whole experience. It feels a bit like strolling through a museum and looking at all the art. What was this artist expressing with this piece?
