Yo quiero que vuelvas 💛❤️

4 years ago, after my sophomore year of high school, I attended my LDZ. Today, I am rising junior in college—halfway through my undergraduate program. While my time in high school ended and while my time in undergrad begins to fade, one thing proves to outlive both eras of my life: NHI.

My commitment to NHI started long before I even knew about NHI. Years ago, Andrea Yarritu staffed at an LDZ outside of New Mexico and inspired a Supreme Court Justice named Sofía Hernández to return back as staff. Years after that, in 2022 when NM LDZ made its return, Sofía inspired a Senator, me, to return as staff. I had seen the way Sofía connected with other with ease and how she always supported her peers by providing connections and advice. It made me want to provide the same support for my own New Mexican community by putting myself out there and getting out of my comfort zone. So, I recruited the smartest people I knew from Gadsden and brought them with me to NM LDZ to show them who they can truly be.

The sustainability of NHI is rooted in its inspiration and encouragement of others. The desire to return as staff is much deeper than wanting to see those that you did your LDZ with—it’s about wanting others to see the light within themselves. I would never have returned if not for the continuous opportunity to grow, to overcome new challenges and to inspire a new generation of Latine leaders. That is what makes NHI sustainable and long lasting.

So, when you think of returning, think of who made you feel inspired and motivated to become truer you. Then, return the favor and help someone else find their true self at NM LDZ next year.

Hasta la próxima. ♥️
