The Museum of Stop Motion Animation and the Crow Collective crafted a celebration of Portland stop motion artists.

The exhibition is part of @adxportland fest and coincides with Portland Open Studios this weekend.

Per the organizers: “Composed of professional animators, model makers, scenic artists and more, the exhibit is a look behind the scenes into the minds of the artists. Each piece will include the story of how it was created to reveal process and ingenuity.”

The exhibition is on display now through 9pm at ADX.

Michael joined the @mosmapdx panel last night at the @hollywoodtheatr to talk stop-motion, and his brilliant film, @lesbetes_film screened for a packed house. Well, of course I know he’s brilliant, but seeing his dynamic, energizing personality on display for everyone else makes me so happy. It was a great night. I forgot to take a picture of me wearing my dad’s jacket, but it looked goooood!

PFCAT is Portland's Animation Festival and has been for quite some time.

15 years of PFCAT.
5 years in Portland.

PFCAT averages over 130 animated films each year from 30+ countries (plus innovative live action films, too) We've hosted dozens of animation panels and keynotes including representatives from LAIKA, ShadowMachine and many others.

We launched a Creator Expo that sold out, poised to grow even more considerably next year! This interactive festival event brings together animation organizations, filmmakers and animators, handmade puppets and props, and the people who make Portland so special.

We've built this because we believe animation deserves a place at the center of Portland's creative community.

Now we’re on to building PFCAT 2027. Let's do this. ❤️

PFCAT! What an event! Thank you Marisa, Peter, and everyone with @thepfcat team for orchestrating one of the best film festivals we’ve ever experienced. Fantastic films, friendly faces, and so much to offer! Informative discussions with industry professionals. Filmmaker talkbacks. Up close and personal looks at stop-motion puppets. Behind the scenes interviews. Meeting new friends (and old!) during countless networking opportunities. And to top it all off, we got to experience Fuzzysurf’s “Don’t Go Overboard” with a full house in a four-story IMAX theater.

It was an honor to share this silver screen with all of these talented filmmakers, unforgettable performances, and wonderful animations. Truly an incredible event.

Here’s a breakdown of highlights from our trip:

1) Ready for The PFCAT at the OMSI
2) The Empirical Theater! Given the size of this screen, audiences are fully immersed in the films.
3) An evening with the animators of LAIKA studios
4) Closeup of the stop-motion stars at the Creator Expo
5) “Don’t Go Overboard” at the Creator Expo
6) “Don’t Go Overboard” in IMAX
7) “Don’t Go Overboard” teaser reel
8) A selection of Director Talkbacks
9) Red Carpet Friends!
10) About to experience “The Crown with a Shadow and the Search for Self” in 3D
11) The Big Night Party complete with DJ PartyBot
12) Attack of The Puppet People Panel
13) Celebrity Sightings!
14) The Award Ceremony / Best Music Video Nominees (“Tender” won) / Best Feature was awarded to “Sender”
15) That’s a wrap on the 2026 PFCAT.
16) Laika’s Wildwood Crows found around the city
17) Will Vinton Studios! The former site of the home of Claymation. A great deal of animated magic happened inside of this building, which now belongs to Tillamook.
18) Portland Art Museum (so much to see, but we had so little time!)
19) Multnomah Falls and Crown Point sunset views overlooking the Columbia River Gorge
20) Mt Hood (with special appearances by Mt St Helens and Mt Adams)

Until next time, Portland…
~ Stay Animated!

So excited to share what I’ve been working on lately for @mosmapdx - restoring and reconstructing an original Mrs. Ladybug puppet from Henry Selick’s 1996 movie “James and the Giant Peach.” MOSMA had her original shirt, sleeves, purse, skirt, and ladybug shell, and I had the task of fabricating her head, hat, hands/arms, body base, legs, socks, and shoes! This project is one of the coolest things I’ve ever done because “James and the Giant Peach” was one of my absolute favorite movies as a kid, so this is such a full circle moment for me. Thank you so much to @brian.capati for trusting me with her! I also have a process video that I’ll be posting soon!

The puppet people keep coming, their numbers are growing and there doesn't seem to be an end in sight!

It's probably best if we have a discussion with some of their leaders.

This event is presented in partnership with MOSMAand will take place August 23rd at 2:30pm at OMSI

Moderated by Melanie Coombs @optimelanie (Producer Mary & Max, GDT's Pinocchio), this panel features Brian Capati (MOSMA) @brian.capati , Cat Solen @catsolen (Producer/Director/Filmmaker Shivering Truth, Olivia Rodrigo The Cure), Rob Shaw (Director The Tiny Chef Show, Portlandia, Aesop Rock), @sirrobrob Kyle Arneson (Director/Production Designer Robot Chicken, Mary Shelley's Frankenhole) and Suzanne Twining @suzanimator_stopmotion (Animator Wendell & Wild, GDT's Pinocchio, In the Know).

"Meet the Animators of LAIKA" is coming to the Empirical Theater on August 20 at 6pm!

Join us for a conversation with the artists behind @laikastudios films, moderated by LAIKA’s Head of Animation Brad Schiff, with Florin Perinelle, Rachelle Lambden, Dan MacKenzie, and Charles Greenfield.

And while you’re here, don’t miss the crow from “Wildwood: Follow the Crows” right in front of OMSI. It’s the perfect pairing: come see the crow, then come meet some of the animators who bring to life the stop-motion in Wildwood and other LAIKA films.
