It’s rare that a father and son will sit in the medicine together. Even rarer for the moment to be captured for others to share.

As we lay next to each other, I felt his hand and soul reach out for safety and stability. When I felt balance return, I placed his hands on his heart, and my soul said, “You got this. Fly. Sit with yourself and learn to navigate the unknown fears. I’m here.”

Later, when I was facing my own fear and the grief was overwhelmingly beautiful, with tears in my eyes, I felt him reach out again. This time, his soul said, “I got you, Dad.”

Feeling his masculine and feminine hold space for me, watching him learn how to create and balance the container while being in the medicine himself, was extraordinary, especially during one’s first experiences with Mother Ayahuasca.

When he went to the altar and collapsed, writhing in his own journey, all I could do was smile and think, “I’m so proud of you. You got this. And it’s okay if you don’t. It all serves.”

Then, the divine feminine came.
Almost every woman sitting around him—his energy calling out to them, and theirs to him. A circle of protection, almost like a rebirth and initiation.

Then the shaman came to him. Divinely guided, recognizing the seed blooming—a path seldom walked and even fewer fully endeavor into. The infinite paths.

As they left, it was my turn to drape my body over him and just love him.
When he sat up, we held hands. Anchoring. Soul-gazing.

It was my turn to show him how to create the container and be in it, without expectation or projection. Feel. Breathe. Release.

Deepen one’s own breath, louder, without words, so the other can attune. Keep the gaze, no matter what, and co-regulate.
Feel. Breathe. Release.

When the pain of loss entered once again and was released through tears, my son leaned into me and held me.
His soul saying, “I got you.”

His holding me was healing me from the shadow; “Horrible father, husband and person.”

I holding him, healing him from the shadow; “Crazy.” “Kill yourself!” “Bad person.”

We are not what others think of us. We are what we choose to believe. Those beliefs can change, even if others don’t.
Thank you shaman @mosstony

I participated in a healing retreat this past weekend, and it was one of the most profound experiences of my life.

I’ve always known this kind of experience would one day be part of my path, but I chose patience and discernment in the timing.

When that time finally came, I understood the magnitude of what I was saying yes to, and I didn’t enter it lightly.

I carried a lot of fear leading up to the ceremony.

Once I committed a few months ago, there were many times where I wanted to back out and run. My discomfort with uncertainty and my tendency to doubt myself naturally found their way into this experience before it had even begun.

Looking back, I feel like life had been preparing me for this moment long before I ever arrived. Everything you’ve watched me move through this past year—the leaps, the surrender, the old parts of myself asking to be witnessed—was leading me here.

I can see now that every step was calling my heart forward in the most loving and beautiful way.

I have so much to continue processing from this weekend. It’s hard to put words around an experience that feels beyond language, but there are many insights I hope to share as they continue unfolding.

More than anything, I’m grateful that I was held with the grace, softness, and kindness I prayed for. I made peace with my past so I could finally turn the page on my old life. I was reminded of the miracles that exist in ceremony, in presence, and in community.

I was witnessed in my fears. I spoke up for myself, asked for what I needed, and remembered that I am the keeper of my own safety.

I made friends I’ll never forget, reconnected with old ones I’d deeply missed, reclaimed my voice, let go of anger, and found a freedom and sense of power that is difficult to describe.

I’m so eternally grateful for this experience and for everyone who helped hold it. Thank you @IAmPowerful2 and @BirdTribe_Music for guiding the entire weekend with such wisdom, integrity, safety, and love. The gifts you shared feel impossible to repay.

I still can’t quite believe I got to experience this.

Until next time 🌿🤍✨

"It's very commonly experienced by the people that come here (to the jungle) to realize, 'I thought it was going to be about Ayahuasca... But it's about the Songs." @dr.joetafur

Icaros is the name used for the healing songs Shipibo shamans sing during ceremonies. In this little segment from our documentary film "The Song That Calls You Home," you can find a few considerations on the subject.
As ethnomusicologist and sound researcher Alexandre Tannous says, the Icaros are so mysterious that infinite explanations as to what they are, where they come from, and how they provide the healing that they do - that infinite interpretations can be accommodated to answer these questions.
More information on the subject and the wondrous world of Shipibo curanderismo in our film.

Prayers to you sacred holy waters.
Infinite source of life and creation.
Generous, free and flowing.

Teaching the primordial dance of life of abundantly giving and receiving.

May your sweet and mighty waters, embedded with the codes of creation, awaken divine remembrance and reclamation within humankind so that we may be good stewards and relations with all life on this beautiful, precious cosmic earth we call home.
