I wrote a small something for @moth_rights Ideas Hub about what’s at stake in coming together with others, and what’s at stake in not coming together. Really, it’s about the Southern Resident Killer Whales, because only 74 remain (you may have heard that another mother was found carrying her deceased calf recently. Pollution, noise, and massive shipping industry are hurting any chance of their survival). Really, it’s also about humans, as we can change our ways. While it’s not really about saving ourselves, or anyone for that matter (I’ve always had a fraught relationship with the word “saving”), it is thinking about the small and big ways we ‘save’ each other and ourselves every day, sometimes in the middle of dinner or a meeting or walking the dog or caring for someone else. Life doesn’t pause. Over the past few decades, we’ve started to listen to other creatures, and I think there’s a lot of space for us humans to grow here and find ways to make listening a daily practice, and perhaps we’ll even engrain it in our darn culture (over the dreaded smartphone vibrating or flashing at us every few seconds, ha!) Hopefully this little article makes this clear. #mothrights #multispecies

’It is unmistakably the case that Song of the Cedars was created both with and by the cloud forest. We wanted to declare and honour the forest’s role as co-author, and to spotlight how for centuries, in jurisdictions around the world, nature has been written out of the story of art and its making.’’ - @robgmacfarlane

For decades, Indigenous Peoples, lawyers, communities, and advocates around the world have been advancing the Rights of Nature, often far from the spotlight. Their determination has brought this idea into courtrooms, constitutions, and communities, laying the groundwork for a different relationship with the living world. Today, as we face devastating climate and ecological crises, the world is beginning to listen.

To see the Rights of Nature in the pages of @nature_the_journal, the most influential scientific journals in the world, feels surreal.

In our new article, Panamanian Minister of Environment @juancanavarro and I explore a simple but transformative idea: that Nature is not simply something we depend on, but a living world with rights of its own.

For Panama, this moment carries particular significance. When I began working to bring the Rights of Nature to Panama in 2020, I feared people would think the idea was a pipe dream. Instead, decision makers listened. They acted. And today, Panama is helping to carry this vision to the United Nations.

Perhaps the world is ready to see that what once seemed radical is, in many ways, simply a recognition of something Indigenous Peoples and communities have understood for generations: Nature is not separate from us. We are Nature.
At a time when we are surrounded by devastating news about the future of our planet, we are grateful to share something positive. Not just hope, but a real proposal for how we can change our relationship with the living world.

More than anything, we hope this article opens another door for Nature. We hope that it reaches people who have never imagined that a river, a forest, a sea turtle population, or coral reef ecosystems could have rights of their own, as well as people who have long understood this relationship but have not yet imagined how it could be reflected in our legal systems.

We hope it inspires countries to listen, and to recognize that another way of living in harmony with Nature is possible.
Perhaps recognizing the Rights of Nature is how we begin to change everything.

Please read our article in Nature and help us share this urgent message with the world. Link in bio.

💧 What does it mean to imagine a river as a living being with its own stories, memories and even rights?

This question runs through Water Body and our collaboration with MOTH, an interdisciplinary initiative advancing rights and wellbeing for humans, more-than-humans and the web of life that sustains us. After Barney @barnaby.steel joined MOTH’s Festival of Ideas in London earlier this year, the conversation continues in Water Body, with MOTH’s research and legal advocacy woven into the work.

The installation features a series of commissioned drawings by Elena Landinez that bring London’s hidden waterways into view, alongside stories of rivers around the world. It draws on the Minganie Municipality and Innu Council of Ekuanitshit resolutions recognising the rights of the Magpie (Muteshekau Shipu) River; Spanish Congress Law 19/2022 concerning the Mar Menor; and the Te Awa Tupua (Whanganui River Claims Settlement) legislation.

As Robert Macfarlane asks in Water Body:
“What if we were to imagine rivers once more as beings with lives, deaths, and even with rights — as life givers, memory keepers, as storytellers?”

Oh @atmos what an Enchanted Forest you created! Thank you @mariapopova for wandering together through notions of justice, fungi, words and so much more. And what a joy it was to share with @juma_xipaia @richardladkani @yanunifilm & @aliceaedy. Listening to @robinwallkimmerer & @willowonearth talk about the the Great Green We was just beautiful. This whole event felt important. Thank you for the music @_diannalopez and to @elizavetaporodina for your art. I hope all who attended enjoyed it and that you can all go and see parts of the event on the Atmos website.

Open the pages of Song of the Cedars and you can see a stunning panorama of Los Cedros Cloud Forest, one of the most biologically diverse habitats on Earth, with all royalties going to the forest itself, in order to support its protected status.

NYC climate week! I’d love to see you. This is a topic very near and dear to my heart. We will discuss what’s happening on the legal fight for the endangered species act (with @earthjustice @benlevitan), the rights of nature (with @moth_rights ), how storytelling, art, and culture change go hand in hand with policy (with @roxizendegi from @designsciencestudio ) AND what I did and learned entering the movement to stop commercial whaling in Iceland. Now more than ever, we must come together to amplify each other’s work. It’ll be part discussion, part strategy session, and part experience—OFC I’ll be playing the bioacoustics 🐋 Please share! And in a sweet turn of events, we are opening up 10 seats for César’s law students- if you have the financial means to cover their tickets, please consider doing so as we’d like the community to come together to make it accessible for them.
