Driving is a huge part of rock and roll’s enduring mythology. Images of cruising down the highway with friends and lovers while basking in the freedom of the open road pervade pop music’s lyrical canon. Yet, so often, these idealized images clash with the everyday drudgery of being a motorist: traffic jams, detours, and bad news on the radio.

This tension is central to @motor.ists’ sound - as much about the colourful possibilities of life as it is about the way those possibilities are boxed in by technologies. It’s clear that, for the band, creative collaboration is the only way to break the tension. In a world where everyone’s been in their own bubble, Motorists have pushed theirs together and worked through feelings of isolation as a group, to the tune of jangly guitars, infectious power pop hooks, and a steady motorik beat. The result is an album full of revelations about what it means to be together, and how bad you want it when you’re being torn apart.

After getting the nod from Jack White to open for him (last year at @masseyhall), Motorists certainly caught our attention. Great people, great music, and Toronto locals. We’re all in!

Come see them with us at SSF - Saturday 26 September at @thegarrisonto! 🎟️ on sale now at the 🔗 in bio 🤘

With the excellent Polaris Long List dropping this past week, I wanted to share four records I championed in my first year as a juror. While they didn’t make the Long List, the conversation extended far beyond the 40 albums that did. These were the records I was genuinely stoked on, and I think they’re all deserving of a little extra love. Give ’em a spin, I hope you’ll love them as much as I do.

Absolute Losers — In The Crowd
Anyone who knows me knows about my love for bands like Sloan, The Super Friendz, and Thrush Hermit. Boy howdy, this record captures that same feeling perfectly.
Pure power-pop bliss. Jangly guitars, massive hooks, and melodies that stick around long after the record ends. Between these fine folks, The Boojums, The Get Alongs, and others carrying the torch, I’ve seen the future. Have you?

Kue Varo & the Only Hopes — How Everything Feels (and Other Lies)
Heartfelt, funny, and deeply human songwriting from one of this city’s most distinctive voices. Kue has a way of connecting with listeners that feels both profound and relatable, all wrapped in warm, rootsy arrangements. One of those records that feels like an old friend from the very first listen.

Motorists — Never Sing Alone
Motorists continue their streak of making some of the finest guitar pop in the country. Bright, driving melodies meet wistful songwriting, creating a record that feels equally suited for a summer road trip or a late-night headphone listen. Thoughtful, melodic, and endlessly replayable.

Yukon Blonde — Friendship & Rock ‘n’ Roll
A band celebrating exactly what the title promises: friendship, good times, and great songs. It’s loose, joyful, and packed with the kind of anthemic hooks Yukon Blonde have been perfecting for over a decade.
(Fun fact: I own Brandon’s old Music Man amp!)

I shouldn't have mentioned basketball at all last week. That was a mistake, and I'm really sorry. I'm also really sorry that this post is a day late. I drank too much coffee and ran around a lot and forgot. Oops!

Spela Död & Motorists Live brings together explosive Swedish guitar rock and shimmering power pop for a night full of energy, noise and emotion.

Spela Död - @spela_dod delivers raw, collective-driven rock in Swedish — packed with countryside mythology, night shifts, doom, decadence and irresistible melodies. Fresh off the release of their latest album NATTPASS, the band leans further into distorted guitars and chaotic live energy where every show feels like a celebration.

Joining the night is Motorists (CA/SWE) - @motor.ists , blending jangly guitars, motorik rhythms and infectious hooks into songs balancing freedom, isolation and the romance of the open road.

Expect loud guitars, sweaty singalongs and indie rock at its finest.

🎟 Free entry.

I recorded this show the day before Game 1 of the ECF, so, as it turns out, I actually don't like the way they dribble up and down the court.

The "It Is the Summer... Schedule, That Is!" Edition of Treasure Trove Radio
💿📀💿📀
Back at 1am and feelin' fine! Who's ready for tunes? Hey, I said I was dropping the spotting fy playlists but I also made those for myself as a record of what I played so I didn't double up on songs from week to week, and after I finished this show, I realized I played a song this show that I did last show, so, uh, playlists are back!
