FRINGE REVIEW | RHOMBOID

At one point in Rhomboid, a young man tries to explain how he feels about his best friend. Romantic doesn't quite fit. Neither does sexual. Friendship won't cover it either.

Eventually, drunk and flailing for a comparison, he finds one: Toby.

Toby was his dog.

It's the best joke in Eric Jiang's Rhomboid, and possibly its best idea. The comparison plainly doesn't work. But the failure itself gets us somewhere.

Funny, tender and beautifully performed, Rhomboid follows Xavier and Sebastian through a relationship that refuses the available categories. Ken Paolo and Lawrence Hawkins are terrific together: acutely alive to each other's bodies, with physical intimacy that flares, retreats and hangs unresolved.

The play is alert to the slipperiness of the categories we use to organise love.

In 2026, I found myself wanting it to push that insight further: when does a description harden into a definition? And when does the language we invent to escape one set of rules begin creating another?

Rhomboid gets tantalisingly close.

Hi! I got to make a lil cameo in @mouk.media ‘s newest masterwork recently. @abandofrain just dropped a music vid for their new song “I’m Trouble” and u can spot me in it! 🩷💜

The cast was directed to look bored by the song, which I interpreted as an inventive form of torture, because the track was catchy and instantly got stuck in my head!

So pictured here is me trying my best to resist vibing 🎶 Give it a listen, it’ll get u too! 🎸

*red velvet dress belonged to my mum in the 70’s and thankfully fits like a dream 💃

A happy accident, today is actually Bandcamp Friday, which means if you head on over to my Bandcamp page and purchase my song, Bandcamp will wave their revenue and the artist (ME!) will actually receive all the money that people spend on their music! Woooohooooo! If that’s not for you, never fear- my music is out now on all streaming platforms, so you can listen to this song however you choose.
