THE TRAILS LESS TRAVELED 🥾⛰️ Every August, the Wheeler Peak area takes a brief pause for tribal traditional and cultural purposes. Beginning this Friday the 21st through the 28th, Williams Lake, Wheeler Peak Summit, and Wheeler Peak Trail no. 90 between La Cal Basin and Wheeler Peak will be closed. The mountains are still calling, and there are plenty of new ways to answer! Consider it an invitation to explore somewhere new. Try Gold Hill, Lobo Peak, Frazer Mountain, or venture into the Columbine-Hondo Wilderness on Gavilan, Italianos, Manzanita or Yerba Canyon trails. We’re down! 🌊🪶🐛🌿 In northern New Mexico, spring unfolds in stages along the Rio Grande, a pulsing artery of water cutting 600 feet deep into the Taos Gorge and home to unique geology and wildlife habitats. As canyon light stretches longer, the hatch organizes itself: midges, then blue-winged olives, then caddis skipping low across the current. Trout rise, flycatchers hover, colorful orioles flow through the trees and rock wrens dance! Fish, bird, insect, human—all moving through the same corridor. Start high on the West Rim Trail, a mesa-top route tracing the gorge edge—big picture, wind, ravens, distance. Drop in via Slide Trail or Picuris Trail, descending from plateau to river in minutes, linking mesa ecology to the lush riparian habitat below inside Orilla Verde Recreation Area, where the system widens and slows into layered life. This BLM stretch holds 10+ named trails and 7 campgrounds along the river: Pilar, Rio Bravo, Arroyo Hondo, Lone Juniper, Petaca, Taos Junction, Rio Pueblo—each a waypoint into cottonwoods, current seams, and hatch zones. Mid-bench and river access trails thread it together like easy favorite La Vista Verde Trail and lesser known Petaca Point Trail, located on Hwy 567 on the mesa top above Taos Junction Bridge (4 miles one-way), with spectacular views of the Rio Grande Gorge, Arroyo Petaca, and Sangre de Cristo Mountains. At Taos Junction Bridge everything shifts. Above it, the Taos Box river segment is tight, volcanic, technical. Then the canyon opens, sediment settles and so do the insects. Birds and anglers take note. As the whitewater ends, quiet floats begin again, drifting south toward Pilar and @farflungadventures HQ. Huge congrats to Paul for completing his birthday challenge: 76 pitches ( we actually finished with 78!)climbed in a year with Lover’s Leap Guides! 🎉🧗‍♂️ Paul showed up with stoke, determination, and a big smile every time he tied in. Over the past year he climbed cracks, faces, and plenty of classics at Lover’s Leap, back East climbing in the Adirondack’s, a day at Sugarloaf, then finishing it off in Red Rocks! Throughout the year, Paul steadily worked toward that goal — and he did it!! 76 pitches for 76 years. What an inspiring way to celebrate a birthday.
