How you handle your trials and your “trails” (pun intended) says a lot about you. Today we introduce to one determined mother and mountaineer who refuse to take a “NO” for answer. @barefootkakes . In 2014,  she was training for her first 50k ultramarathon. She was a newly trained yoga instructor, and was homeschooling her four kids. .
That summer, Kristyan had an unexpected rock climbing accident that shattered her talus. Her surgeon told her, what no athlete EVER wants to hear, that she could never run, hike, or even do yoga again. She was devastated but refused to accept this. .
Kristyan then, found a PT, and after much dedication, she ran a trail 25k 8 months later- (but she was still hoping to do her 50k. race)! After awhile, she suffered pains from a kidney stone, but little did she know that the stone was going to be saving her life. While she got the CT scan, it showed liver lesions and an IUD that had gone missing 7 years before, and it was millimeters from killing her, based on poison levels. A series of procedures followed including open abdominal surgery. Recovery was slow and difficult, but she started training and hoped, once again, to pursue her first 50k race. However, 8 months after her surgery, another incident occurred. She felt off a ladder, and broke her foot in 4 places. At this point she sank into deep depression and PTSD. Suicidal ideation sent her to therapy, and mystery health issues were shutting down her organs and damaging her brain.
Finally it was discovered that she had severe copper toxicity. She hunted down doctors that could help her, did her research and begin making as full a recovery as it was possible. “In her words:➡️ “My brain therapies led me to art- carving and painting the mountains that I love so much. I had started Mountain Soul Co. (@mountainsoulco ) and now I make natural jewelry and mountain art.
By November of 2018, I was finally crossing the finish line of my first 50k ultramarathon. I now love teaching yoga, and I am beyond grateful for my recovery and experience”. .
1. What word best describes you?🌱
Kind- my struggles have taught me that everyone’s journey is valid.
