I had to stop by @artbugallery to see this fabulous painting by @mousemaux! Through a plein air discipline and automatic drawing, Lisa has developed a method that unites chance and natural observation in a seamless tapestry of light and color. I love her quality of line and the competing tension between the horizontal and the vertical that evokes early Mondrian.

The Devouring Territory
Group Show
•••••
Saturday, March 14, 6-10 pm
Ruth Gallery at ARTBUG
2441 Hunter Street, Los Angeles
Through April 4, 2026

The Devouring Territory brings together nine artists bound by an attachment to painting in plein air. While the selected works are primarily studio pieces, they are shaped by sustained encounters with the landscape. Rather than direct transcriptions, these images emerge secondhand—digested, remembered, and renegotiated.

Nature often appears not as a fixed subject but as something absorbed and reconstituted through time, sensation, and the interior space of the studio. The exhibition explores how the environment is transformed once it is filtered through the lens of memory and artistic process.

The participating artists include Carl Baratta, Alicia Cheatham, Amanda Mears, Sarah Granett, Anthony Prud’homme, Elizabeth C. Wild, Lisa Bahouth, Liz Watson, and Alice Marie Perreault.

I am preparing for “Devouring The Landscape,” a collection of work by an energetic group of painters who seek the outdoor grounded space as much as their indoor studio zones. So here I am pulling out “unfinished” plein air meditations to revisit them in my studio where my son naps nearby and our golden doodle is at my feet. My only visual reference is within memory. It is strange how I am almost back in the locations where I can still smell the dirt and moisture left from the rains. The chaotic foliage now lurks of monsters. Surely, there are flying monkeys nearby. #ruthgallery #artbug #lapleinair (that’s a thing!) #watercolorrevisited #alicemarieperreaultart

Day 2 of my @ikea.residency project “Artificial Edens” and my outdoor painting group returns to @ikeausa plastic plants department.

We began our day drinking free @ikeafamily tea and coffee and discussing how to respond to the strangely seductive fakery. Last session we experienced overwhelm - so much color, so many different forms that are almost, but not quite, wonderful. Everything just a disconcerting echo of something we would love if it was real.

We were bolder this time. We spread our supplies out on the shelves and display surfaces and started to draw and paint. Only two curious people asked us what we were doing.

This time our drawings seemed to engage more with the attractiveness of the fake garden. I think we let go of judging it. Maybe we surrendered to it? We settled into our new reality - a group of plein air painters drawing artificial plants. We realized that the act of drawing was the authentic act here. I think there will still be flower paintings at the end of the world and they will feel more real than the simulacra that inspire them.

Thank you to this week’s participants:
