The masseter lab is always a good one to get comfortable with during our Upper Body and Advanced Dry Needling courses. It gives you another option for patients dealing with jaw tension, pain with chewing, and headaches. Targeting both portions of the masseter can often create an immediate massive change in pain for patients in need. Don't go much longer without being able to offer this tool to your patients.

Have you used dry needling for TMJ pain before? Let us know in the comments.

Familiarity breeds shortcuts…and the needlers who stay sharp are the ones who keep respecting the anatomy even after hundreds of reps.

This week’s Top 3 is a reminder to re-palpate, re-check your landmarks, and treat every session like it’s your first time in that region…because your patient deserves that level of care whether it’s rep #1 or rep #1000.

Even experienced needlers need a tune-up. Brush off the dust, become more specific and strategic, and join us on the road…because that’s what makes you Monday Morning Ready.

What muscle still makes you slow down? Drop it in the comments 👇

Want to get more out of your next dry needling course? Do these 3 things:

1. Know your anatomy.
Study up on your muscles, origins & insertions, nerves and vessels nearby etc. The less time you spend guessing, the more time you spend learning.

2. Sharpen your palpation.
You don’t need needles to practice finding anatomy. Great needling starts with great hands. Any free time in class… palpate, palpate, palpate.

3. Just do it.
Confidence doesn’t come from another course—it comes from treating patients. Use the skills, learn from every session, and keep showing up.

A weekend course is just the start. What you do before and after is what makes the difference.

Mistake #1: Thinking Every Needle Needed a Twitch

Early on, I thought every treatment needed a local twitch response. While a twitch can be a valuable sign that you’ve reached the muscle spindle interaction, it’s not always necessary—or even tolerable —to elicit one manually (helllllo pelvic floor). In many cases, adding electrical stimulation allows you to confirm a motor response without chasing repeated needle pistoning.

The goal isn’t the twitch itself—it’s using the right strategy to create the physiological response you’re after while keeping the treatment purposeful and comfortable for your patient.

Mistake #2: Treating the Muscles Instead of the Person

Early on, I asked myself, “What muscle should I needle?” Now I ask, “What am I trying to accomplish?”

Am I trying to reduce pain and improve movement tolerance? Prime the neuromuscular system before exercise? Enhance recovery after a demanding training session? The answer changes how I needle—everything from my target tissue to whether I add electrical stimulation and what I do immediately afterward.

Dry needling isn’t just about putting a needle into a muscle. It’s about choosing the right intervention for the physiological response you’re trying to create. Once I shifted my focus from what I was needling to why I was needling, my treatments became much more intentional—and my patients got better results.

Mistake #3: Thinking More Needles = Better Results

One of the most common mistakes new dry needlers make is feeling like every painful muscle and every tender spot needs to be treated.

In reality, more needles don’t necessarily lead to better outcomes. A targeted treatment based on clinical reasoning is often more effective than treating every tissue that reproduces symptoms. The goal isn’t to needle everything you find—it’s to identify the key impairments driving the patient’s presentation and needle with purpose.

A few well-chosen targets, followed by movement and progressive loading, will often have a greater impact than any passive tool in our toolbox.

Precision almost always beats quantity.

🎯 Dry Needling the Infraspinatus

The infraspinatus is one of the most frequently needled muscles in the shoulder complex—and for good reason.

Clinical pearls when approaching the infraspinatus:
🔹 Anatomical awareness is safety. Firm understanding of scapular borders determines safe needle trajectory.

🔹 Know your referral patterns. Infraspinatus refers into anterior shoulder and posterior/lateral arm.

➡️ ➡️ to see when and how to best utilize DN to the infraspinatus
