Choreographer’s Perspective

I keep returning to motion capture not because I want a perfect digital copy of the body.

I’m interested in what it makes me notice as a choreographer:

weight being carried
a gesture becoming data, flowing beyond its center
a body becoming another body
a hug strangely melting two bodies together

Sometimes the negotiation is where the choreography begins.

I’ve been bringing mocap and performance systems into very different spaces—from my living room to experimental performances—asking how technology might expand the imagination of motion we can embody for storytelling, while still holding onto the love of movement between our bodies.

In this video, the warrior-mother avatar from @livinglandscape_dance is embodied by @sagesanchezz and me. The moment was captured by someone very special: Rotem, the mother of my composer @11ai.link The curator @ct_carr who invited me to join Machine Cinema reached out to showcase our process, and her daughter later shared with me the joy and inspiration she found in the performance. Somehow, we keep finding special ways into each other’s work—supporting one another across bodies, generations, and variable realities. ♡

My relationship with MOVIN @movin3d also has its own little timeline. I first met the team around @official_gdc 2024, and since then I’ve enjoyed exchanging observations with their developers about bodies, #TRACIN, #markerless #algorithm, #connections and live performance.

They came to @calarts to experience my hour-long dance thesis using their first model at the end of 2025. Now the system has become something I can set up quickly, travel with, perform live with—and increasingly bring into many other artists’ practices.

Thanks @movin3d for the trust and for letting an artist keep asking questions alongside the technology.

I’d love to keep sharing what I’m discovering where bodies × augmented performance meet—and what becomes possible when motion capture is not just capturing movement, but entering the choreography with us.
