FROM-SCRATCH OUTFITS FROM COHORT 3 of OYOO!

A little over a month ago we had the joy of hosting our third symposium, and we capped off the morning speaker series with an incredible fashion show showcasing some of the creations from Cohort 3 of the One Year, One Outfit project.

This project has so much soul built into it. It’s a testament to people, animals, plants, many hands, lots of pivot points, and slowing down down down down— and how valuable all of that is.

It’s also a practice in moving away from quantifying value in terms of time spent, money spent. So many of these garments could never sell at a price point that would pay their creators a living wage — and while that may feel problematic on some levels, one of the questions project begs is: what is beyond quantifying value in terms of money?

How much does it mean to take a year to make an outfit completely from scratch? What do you gain from it? What do you offer because of it? What does the community gain? How does the culture shift? What world are we building into? What possibility are we demonstrating?

Sometimes we can get a little philosophical about it because we really care, but just as importantly as all the above questions: THIS PROJECT IS PRETTY DAMN FUN!

You can still sign up for Cohort 4 of One Year, One Outfit, but do it today! Our first meeting is on Tuesday night the 10th via Zoom. It doesn’t matter where you live, you can join us from anywhere and work in parallel alongside the RBF to make an outfit.

Link in bio for allll the information and to sign up!

We love you!

Hell yeah our community is making clothing from our place—and, yeah, it does take a lot of time to do it. And that’s one thing our modern, western, Capitalist, extractive culture doesn’t really, like, want us to do.

All the more reason to pick up your knitting needles, carders, looms, tanning tools, dremels, crochet hooks, felting tools, sewing machines, etc. All the more reason to get to know your farmers, the plants that grow in the parks, the community members with skills you can learn from in exchange for a pot of soup.

One Year One Outfit is not going to save the world, no. But it might be one little step towards living into a future you’d rather envision than the current one.

Cohort 4 starts in February!

One of our favorite questions from yesterday’s artist panel involved asking about time. Time to make an outfit from scratch from our place. The “one year” aspect of the project. The slow fashion of it. Ultimately: does it feel sustainable to create clothing this way, using so much time to make an outfit?

We wish we would have recorded the answers because they turned the question on its head. Instead of thinking of it as a time sink, the artists shared in their own ways: making an outfit like this is something they WANT to do. It’s something they do to think. Something to relax. Something to have time to themselves. Something instead of doomscrolling. Something where the smallest amount of daily actions- a little spinning here, a few rows of knitting there- before you know it these actions add up to an outfit.

We couldn’t help but note the through line of joy propelling the action, and that it feels so good to create something.

Of course some said they hit their points where they would rather not see knitting needles for a bit, but ultimately creating a slow fashion outfit from scratch was very, very worth the time.

We try to be clear with this project: we aren’t ever saying that making all of your own clothes from scratch is an at-scale solution for our fast fashion problem.

BUT we do say: if you start to mend your own clothes, overdye your own clothes, care about where they come from, swap em with friends, upcycle them, and then maybe make a garment from scratch once in awhile… things will absolutely shift.

And the biggest of those shifts might not even be lowered carbon emissions … it might be in what else this world can become that we can’t even envisage yet because instead of spending time consuming, we are spending it creating!

Thank you so much to everyone who came to yesterday’s panel! Special thanks to @brewhousearts for hosting this show, and for @katydementforreal, @gretchengardentextiles, @silkdenimpgh, @m_mcclintock_cmd, @dad_bee, and @movingstudio for participating in the panel!

And to @kaylakayak92 and @thecroneandco for help w deinstall!!!

About 18 months ago, a group of folks got together on zoom to kick off their participation in the RBF slow fashion challenge: OYOO. (One Year, One Outfit, or as we like to say “One Year, What is Time?”)

100% of these materials for these outfits are sourced from our incredible Rust Belt region. Some people even made pieces from their backyard. The goal of the project is to draw attention to our materials, our processes. It’s to find a new appreciation for clothing and for making, and for all the collaborators along the way—human and non-human alike.

There were challenges (like @sallyericksonwilson tub-retting flax in the wintertime in her tub in her house) and there were experiments (@copperweaver was doing something with bark at one time, I believe!) and there were pivots (like @margaretmacysankey making a decision to make a baby outfit!). And all of this many, many times over.

There were so many incredible people in the project who didn’t complete an outfit all the way, but each enriched our group by bringing themselves to our monthly chats or posting on our online chat space., contributing to the stoke, the vision, the ideas. And just, like, making friendships and connection.

It’s so exciting to be a part of this emergent project. What is going to come through each time?! (like @dad_bee cat’s face!)

The finished outfits from Cohort 3 are on exhibition for one more week at @brewhousearts in Pittsburgh. We’ll close on Saturday by hearing from some of the creators themselves. You can hear about their processes and materials, and ask questions. We would LOVE to see you there!

And if you live in the Rust Belt region, you can sign up for more information on joining Cohort 4, which will kick off in February.

And finally, mark your calendars for January 24, as we’ll have our 3rd annual symposium in Cleveland where you’ll be able to see these outfits in action! (More info and early bird tickets to come).
