August was dedicated to revisiting the stories, insights and perspectives of the women we had the pleasure of speaking with throughout this season of Women in Bloom.

Through Still Growing, we returned to conversations that continue to stay with us — the thoughts, questions and ideas that shift, unfold and take root long after the conversation ends.

As we close out the month, all episodes from this season are available to listen to on Spotify.

There are moments that begin quietly — around a table, in a home, with people gathered together and somehow leave us wanting to hold onto the feeling long after they’ve passed.

In this moment from Still Growing, Mpho Phalane reflects on the magic she found in hosting people at her home and her desire to make that feeling linger beyond the weekend. Living between a world of constantly giving to others and finding small pockets of time for herself, she began to imagine a space where that feeling could live on.

And that’s where Food, I Love You began.

A moment from Women in Bloom, recorded live.

Full episode out now on Spotify — link in bio.

Food carries more than flavour. It holds stories, memories, places and the people we share them with.

Mpho Phalane, Founder and Creative Steward of Food, I Love You, reflects on the way food connects us to where we come from and the moments we carry with us.

We don’t only remember what we ate. We remember who we were when we ate it.

Food has an extraordinary ability to hold a time, a place, a person, even a version of ourselves.

It’s why we have comfort foods — meals that somehow make us feel safe because of what, or who, we associate them with. A dish can return us to a childhood kitchen, a Sunday afternoon, a family gathering, a holiday, or a person we love.

And as we grow older, some of those memories become even more meaningful. A family recipe becomes more precious as we begin to understand that what’s being passed down is more than a set of ingredients. We find ourselves making the dishes we grew up eating, recreating traditions and, sometimes without even realising it, making new food memories of our own.

As part of our Still Growing series, we’re returning to a thought shared by Mpho during Food in Bloom:

“Food is memory.”

Because perhaps food is never just food. Sometimes, a taste can take us home.

#PeopleYouShouldKnow

Chef, entrepreneur and culinary curator Mpho Phalane (@mpho_deane_phalane) is reimagining South African food culture through local ingredients, forgotten flavours and the power of gathering.

Through Food, I Love You (@foodiloveyou_), Phalane has built a culinary practice rooted in connection and belonging. Her former Constitution Hill restaurant became a space where food, heritage and storytelling came together, creating memorable experiences around the table.

While that chapter has closed, the spirit of Food, I Love You lives on. And as Mpho looks towards what’s next, we’re excited to see where her ever-evolving culinary journey takes her.

Nourishment extends far beyond what we eat. It lives in the practices, people and experiences that sustain how we work, create, gather and become.

This Wednesday, our weekly salon series welcomes Mpho Phalane, Founder and Creative Steward of Food, I Love You, for How We Feed Ourselves — a lecture exploring food as a practice rather than simply an output, and the courage required to remain curious enough to expand that practice.

Moving through memory, experience, pain and joy, Mpho reflects on what sustains us — our work, our sense of self, our creative practices and the spaces we create to gather, connect and keep becoming.

Join us for an evening of reflection, ideas and conversation.

🗓️26 August
⏰17:00–21:00

These are the voices we’ll be returning to this month.

From food to design, music to media, fashion to entrepreneurship, this season of Women in Bloom brought together women working across some of the most exciting corners of the creative industries. Each conversation offered a different perspective, but together they painted a richer picture of what it means to build a creative life with intention.

Throughout August, we’ll be revisiting these conversations in different ways—sharing full episodes on Spotify where possible, alongside audio moments, memorable quotes and reflections from each conversation across our platforms.

Whether you joined us in the room or are discovering these voices for the first time, we hope you’ll find something that stays with you, long after you’ve finished listening.

Still Growing begins this month. 🌼
