What a joy to bring Cabaret Conversations to a live audience for the first time.

What began as a pandemic experiment has grown into a destination for artists and audiences who love cabaret, Broadway and musical theater, and its 40th edition marked a new chapter for the series: live, in person at The 92nd Street Y, New York.

Tony Award winner and Broadway favorite Lindsay Mendez joined acclaimed cabaret performer and 92NY Director of Cabaret Programs Michael Kirk Lane for a conversation that went beyond her celebrated career onstage. Lindsay spoke about the art of cabaret, her philosophy on teaching and the importance of passing along the lessons she received from her own mentors to the next generation of artists.

And bringing Cabaret Conversations into the room means getting to hear our guests sing. Accompanied by acclaimed pianist and music director Yasuhiko “Yaz” Fukuoka, Lindsay wowed the audience with performances of “Something’s Coming” from West Side Story and “Miss Byrd” from Closer Than Ever.

As we look back on this year’s 92NY Gala and an unforgettable evening of artistry, ideas, and community, one thing feels especially true: Sharing the Light was not simply this year’s theme, it was the spirit of the night. ✨

Hosted by Juju Chang, Board Member and co-anchor of ABC News’ Nightline, the night moved between ideas, artistry, reflection, and celebration as we honored leadership expert and author Dov Seidman, John and Jody Arnhold and family and acclaimed dancer and choreographer Ephrat Asherie.

We heard inspiring remarks from 92NY Board Chair Jill Lafer, Rabbi David Ingber, and New York City Council Speaker Julie Menin, and watched moving films about the honorees and the role 92NY continues to play in a complicated world.

As meaningful as those moments were, the evening also brought joy, surprise, and celebration: an unforgettable appearance by legendary jazz musician Wynton Marsalis and his trio, a dazzling performance from acclaimed dancer and choreographer Caleb Teicher, a moving tribute from trailblazing ballerina Misty Copeland honoring John and Jody Arnhold and family and a powerful closing performance by Ephrat Asherie and her extraordinary dance company.
