From within the education system in South LA, success was held adjacent to high paying, predominately white careers and spaces. “Pursue the highest paying job or a career path marked by societal standards of “good and white”.

What the hell does that even mean? I remember sitting in too many classes, in too many grades, that said you’d “end up in food service” if you didn’t bring your grades up, if you didn’t try harder. Was that a threat? Is that punishment?

My only dream from childhood was to go to college. Not that I knew what I’d study, not that I’d have a plan after, but the thought was that school would give me opportunity. And I’d be lying if I said it didn’t. But it wasn’t the way society told me it would be. I wasn’t in a frat. I didn’t study engineering. Instead, it made me the brown guy in a white space, where I had always been the white guy in brown spaces. It made my mixed self whole.

And It led me to people and experiences that shaped who I am. It brought me to food/beverage and hospitality. The irony.

Today I got to revel in the power flipping. The team pushed out 3 courses and 2 cocktails for 400 people. Let’s say it this way, WE WERE THE HEADLINERS.

I make coffee y’all. Like it’s not that deep but also it’s that deep. I saw the shock on people’s faces when I told them I can’t speak Spanish, and the joy of sharing drinks and food after the heat cooled off. To think I’d find a place I’d belong.

I got to see magic on display tonight. This team is freaking magic y’all. Hard work and magic. 👊🏼💥
