Did you know tattoos have a rich tradition in the Philippines? Although I'm an LA girl through and through - my cultural foundation comes from the Philippines (even living there when I was 7)... I'm a little late to AAPI month but culture's something that we celebrate every day all year round. (Newsflash post colonial world 🥰) ⁣
⁣
✨I was inspired at the incredible artistry and story of @apowhangod , the world's oldest tattoo artist (she turned 106 this year) who graced the cover of Vogue Philippines’ April 2023 issue. ⁣
⁣
Batok, a hand-tapping tattoo technique that has been around for about a thousand years, revived in popularity influenced by a segment on the Discovery Channel series “Tattoo Hunter” back in 2007. Tattoo tourists from around the world travel to Buscalan to meet the famed artist and to participate in the ancient tattoo ritual, that continues to live on through Apo’s trained descendants. From ancient warriors to tribal symbols, tattoos in pre-colonial times were a symbol of protection, beauty and strength. Today, embracing our heritage and diverse beauty standards is what it's all about! 🙌🏽✨ Read more about this Filipina Queen in the latest @Voguephilippines article!⁣
