FREE FOOD FOR ANYONE THAT CAN BEAT US IN A RACE! 😂🏃🏾‍♂️💨

Another day out doing outreach across Aston and Newtown.

Sport and fitness is always a great way to engage with young people. Sometimes all it takes is a race, a football or a little challenge to break down barriers, start conversations and build relationships.

Outreach is about meeting young people where they are.

No fancy setting. Just being present, being consistent and creating positive opportunities to engage.

Although I think some of these young people have been waiting for the opportunity to race us 😂

Last weekend, we also had our annual Summer BBQ.

This celebrated THREE years of Barbershop Chronicles. Swipe all the way to see a picture from the very first one 🎉

We host this BBQ for two reasons:

1. Connection is a powerful protector of mental health and well-being. Building community is essential.

2. Because we want to celebrate our Black men! We have come so far as a community but let’s not forget we are coming from a history of taboo and stigma (which STILL exists) when talking about mental health. We want to celebrate the black men who chose to stand up and make a difference. They are the beginning of generational changes within their families. Isn’t that something to celebrate? We @themelaninmoods sure do not take it lightly, we recognise what it actually takes to attend and talk.

So, we celebrate with a Summer BBQ! The first one hosted at @sevenstarbarbers the foundation of the programme 🙌🏾

The last two have been hosted at @birminghamsettlement1899 to allow room for extended family and friends to attend too.

- THREE years.
- 30+ Barbershop Chronicle sessions.
- Over a 100+ NEW black men.
- 300+ men attended
- Now in TWO locations.
- An average of 15.5 men (we did the stats) each month.
- 3 BBQs & 2 Football sessions.

Black Men, big up yaself! Swipe to see how we celebrated. 1/2 posts💙

Throwing it back to Soul Food, session 2. It was a feast for the body and soul!

The theme was ”Don’t Worry About a Thing”, and, as we prepared a traditional Jamaican spread of Ackee & Saltfish/Callaloo, served with hard food and fried plantain, we also shared an important conversation about anxiety. What it is, how it can show up in our daily lives, and practical ways we can manage it.

Between chopping, stirring and seasoning, we explored the power of slowing down, connecting with others, and creating space for ourselves when life feels overwhelming.

Food has always been about more than nourishment. It’s about culture, community, healing and connection. This session was a beautiful reminder of that.

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make the evening such a success. ❤️

🔥Next up: Friday 19th June🔥

We’re bringing the flavour with Jerk Chicken and Fried Dumplings/Festival. Come along for another evening of cooking, conversation, community and delicious food.

Whether you’re a seasoned cook or just coming for the vibes, there’s a place for you at the table.

Mental Health Awareness Week

At MADE CIC, one thing we’ve learned through mentoring, counselling-informed practice and community work is that a lot of anger is often unaddressed sadness.

Too many young people and men grow up believing they have to “stay strong”, bottle things up and carry everything in silence. Over time, emotions that are never spoken about can come out through anger, shutting down, risky behaviour or emotional disconnection.

This conversation came from one of our drop-in mentoring sessions, a space designed for honest conversations, reflection and support without judgement. Sometimes young people and adults don’t need fixing, they just need somewhere safe to talk openly.

We’ve seen first-hand what happens when people finally feel heard. People begin opening up about pressures, grief, trauma, family struggles, identity and emotions they’ve been carrying for years.

The reality is, nobody is okay all the time.
We are not meant to suppress everything we feel.

At MADE CIC, we believe emotional expression is strength, not weakness. Sometimes the most powerful thing someone can have is a trusted space to release what they’ve been holding onto.

Healing often starts with conversation.
