“(Olivia) Lost and Turned Out” is a classic 1978 soul song by the R&B group The Whispers, released on their album Headlights via Solar Records.

The song is based on a true story about a young woman named Olivia. Written by songwriters Malcolm Anthony (along with uncles Wayne and Malcolm Bell) who were related to Olivia. According to group member Walter Scott, Olivia got caught up in street life and prostitution after being manipulated by a man while on her way to her grandmother’s house. Her uncles pitched the song directly to The Whispers by playing it on the piano, hoping the record might reach and help pull Olivia out of the streets.

The song became one of the group’s most famous and enduring ballads, and the real-life Olivia eventually left the street life. The track stands out as a powerful and uniquely groovy cautionary narrative from the 1970s.

“Trust in Him” is a classic gospel song by The Clark Sisters featuring Rance Allen, alongside the Michigan State Choir. Originally released on their 1989 album Bringing It Back Home (with live recording origins dating back to around 1986 in Detroit).

Twinkie Clark originally sent a cassette tape of the song to Rance Allen via FedEx while he was traveling on the road, but due to hotel mix-ups, he never received or heard the tape before arriving. When he landed in Detroit for the recording, Twinkie simply wrote out the lyrics for him on the spot, and he sang the entire song live on stage in front of the audience without ever having heard the melody beforehand.

“Love Has Fallen On Me” is a soulful R&B song recorded by Chaka Khan for her 1978 platinum-selling debut solo album, Chaka, released October 12, 1978.

The song was originally written and performed by the psychedelic soul/jazz group Rotary Connection (which famously featured Minnie Riperton) before Chaka Khan re-envisioned it for her solo debut.

The song describes the sudden, overwhelming sensation of falling deeply in love, using the poetic imagery of love tumbling down like rain during the month of September.

The vibe captures feelings of nostalgia, wonder, and the blissful distraction of a burning new romance that takes over the singers’s usual routine.
