Gender Stories, is currently running @walkerartgallery . A ground-breaking exhibition featuring works by David Hockney, Catherine Opie, Grayson Perry, Rene Matić, Zanele Muholi, Del LaGrace Volcano and David Locke @mrdavidlock , it explores the role art can play in questioning traditional gender roles.

Exhibiting:
One hundred years ago, I spent a happy three months in residence with the arts' organization, @firstsitecolchester

This week I was pleased to make a return as part of Firstsite's new group exhibition, 'Duncan Grant: Worlds Through Desire'. The show cruises Grant's work - including his ero{ica - through the various lenses of contempoary artists who are also investigating queer intimacy - myself included.

The show includes moving image, sound, painting, drawing, 3-d, text and poetry, and was opened with some remarkable performances. In its themes and curation it is pioneering in legitimate territory which we are too often discouraged from exploring.

This takes courage and I am therefore very proud to support and be part of this important show. Thanks to George and the Firstsite team.

The exhibition runs until 8th November 2026.

David Lock’s paintings question how masculinity is constructed—treating it not as fixed, but as fluid, fragile, and culturally performed.

Using a collagist approach, Lock assembles imagery from magazines and mainstream media, then translates these compositions into paintings that deconstruct idealised representations of men. 
There’s vulnerability in his process. By breaking down these ideals, Lock reveals the uncertainty beneath—the gap between cultural expectations and lived experience. 
As artist Steve Cox observes: “Lock suggests that [male identity] is a fragile edifice constructed on the shifting sands of unreliable cultural constraints.” 
In exposing this instability, Lock’s work asks not just what masculinity is, but whether it can—or should—be defined at all.
