ARI ASTER IS IN HIS DANIEL RADCLIFFE ERA

There is a very specific kind of actor who gets famous for one enormous thing and then spends the rest of their career sprinting as far away from it as physically possible.

Daniel Radcliffe did it after Harry Potter. Suddenly he was doing theatre, weird indies, Swiss Army Man, Guns Akimbo, Imperium, and every other project that seemed to say, “please stop imagining me in a robe, I have range and possibly guns attached to my hands.” His own bio now basically reads like a man trying to outpace the word wizard.
And honestly, Ari Aster might be doing the director version of that.

After Hereditary and Midsommar, everyone knew what they thought an Ari Aster film was. Trauma. Grief. Screaming. Cults. Horrible little houses full of emotional damp. Then came Beau Is Afraid, and now Eddington, his A24 Covid-era western-thriller-politics-anxiety-whatever-the-hell-this-is, starring Joaquin Phoenix and Pedro Pascal in a small-town standoff that looks designed to make Reddit collapse into powder.

Sometimes artists need to escape the thing people decided they were. Sometimes gracefully. Sometimes by walking on stage naked. Sometimes by taping guns to their hands. Sometimes by making Joaquin Phoenix have a crisis in New Mexico. @mrjamesbertie does podcasts now. Get used to it.
He joined us as we covered Obsession on The Every Movie Ever Podcast, and somehow got into Ari Aster, Eddington, Beau Is Afraid, A24, Daniel Radcliffe, Harry Potter, Guns Akimbo, Swiss Army Man, actors trying to prove range, directors swerving expectations, and the sacred human right to yell “I’M NOT HARRY POTTER” while making deeply strange career choices.

NIKKI WALKING BACKWARDS IS PURE HORROR NONSENSE

Every now and then a horror film does something so simple and so deeply wrong that your brain immediately files a complaint with the rest of the body.

In Obsession, that moment is Nikki walking backwards.

Not flying. Not turning into a demon. Not crawling up the wall like a haunted spider with a Pilates membership. Just walking backwards in a way that makes every normal human instinct go, “no thank you, that is not how people should be using legs.”

That is the horrible little magic of it. Curry Barker’s Obsession understands that horror does not always need a giant monster, a thousand jump scares or a man in a wet mask breathing through plumbing. To get @mrjamesbertie
Ben and I scared erect, all you need is to play some film backwards.

It is funny, creepy, stupidly effective and exactly the sort of tiny physical detail that sticks in your head after the film ends. The One Wish Willow may be the big cursed-object nightmare, Bear may be the walking red flag with woodland admin powers, but Nikki walking backwards is the bit where your nervous system quietly packs a bag.

We covered Obsession on The Every Movie Ever Podcast with special guest @mrjamesbertie, including Curry Barker, Inde Navarrette, Michael Johnston, Bear, Nikki, the One Wish Willow, indie horror, psychological horror, horror comedy, creepy movement, cursed romance, bad men, magic sticks, and why sometimes the scariest thing in a film is someone using their knees incorrectly.

WIND IN THE ONE WISH WILLOWS

Some horror films ease you in gently. Obsession looks you dead in the eye and says, “I literally hate your guts, I'm going to punish you for choosing to watch me.”

Which is, legally speaking, romance if you are the average teenage boy.

This is Curry Barker’s Obsession, a deeply strange little horror movie about Bear, Nikki, the One Wish Willow, romantic delusion, cursed objects, bad decisions, worse boundaries, and the timeless male belief that the solution to rejection is probably somewhere in a haunted shrub.

It is messy, nasty and funny all at once, with the exact energy of a fairy tale written by someone who has read too many toxic relationship threads but still decided that was exactly what they deserved.

And that is the thing that makes it work. Obsession is not just “boy likes girl, girl does not like boy, woodland admin error occurs.” It is indie horror, psychological horror, horror comedy, cursed romance, monkey’s paw nonsense, and a very nasty little story about what happens when someone thinks love is something you can win, force, summon, bargain for, or get delivered by a haunted bit of tree.

We covered Obsession on The Every Movie Ever Podcast with special guest @mrjamesbertie including Curry Barker, Michael Johnston, Inde Navarrette, Bear, Nikki, Cooper Tomlinson, the One Wish Willow, indie horror, 2020s horror, horror comedy, psychological horror, cursed objects, romantic obsession, toxic romance, A24 horror-adjacent chaos, Milk and Serial, The Chair, and why sometimes the scariest thing in the woods is a boy with feelings and absolutely no emotional plumbing.

Having only just finished unpacking, finally ready to take a big ol photo dump of The Shocking Truth About Flat Earth!!

@shockingtruthmusical was an unreal experience, the entire team were a dream to work with, from the stupendously talented cast to the ever enthusiastic creative team from @wolvesgrand and of course the very handsome writers Tuffrey & Moneypenny. Thank you for all the support from everyone who watched, let’s hope the show has a future somewhere wherever it may be.

Also my love goes out to the friends and loved ones who I had many a lonkero/discount beer with and to the new pals I made from just shooting the shit in the beautiful chaos that is the fringe. I for sure went from being a Doubter to a Believer RIGHT?!?
