@mackyardevents Backyard Ultra - done son.

I don't normally write posts like this but I'm proud of this one and I want to mark it.

5 years ago I had a heart attack. At the time I liked mountain biking but that was the only real cardio I did. I had just met Kate - my now mega wife - who was into running. My cardiologist said I may need to spend some time learning to do more chill things, increase my cardio and stop being so focused on being, and I quote, "a giant of a human who is incredibly strong."

I started running and I hated it.

I heard @jamessmith say something along the lines of - to not be completely shit you should be able to run 3km without stopping. Off I went and failed at 1.2km. Totally fucked. That became the goal. 3km. When that was done, 5km. Then 10km. Months went by. Then a year. Consistently hating running but going anyway.

No runner's high. No moment where I thought "I just ran 10km and don't really remember it." No BS. It hurt every time. But I did it because I didn't want another heart attack. I wanted to live longer than a fucking heart attack.

So the eating became better. Testing supplements on myself to try move that cardiac needle. More running. Then out of nowhere a half marathon at 6am on a rainy morning on the river. All of a sudden I could do this shitty thing and feel OK. I remember thinking a half was impossible - and then it was done.

30km was next. I hit that at an @omniaperformance event around Battersea Park without telling anyone I was basically running a PB after a couple of hours. Some people did 50km that day and I remember thinking I could never do that. But something changed. I wanted 50km more than I wanted a marathon.

50 fucking km. I really wanted that. I wanted it before I turned 40 but injuries and life had other ideas.

Three weeks after turning 40 - I got it. From 30km straight to 50km. A real fuck around and find out moment.

Around a hideous 2km track of concrete, surrounded by a bunch of legends, at an event run by two of the nicest blokes you'll ever meet and their parents riding shotgun.

I'm proud. Like really fucking proud.

Been a pretty great twelve months travelling the world with my favourite people. Feeling very grateful to have built a life that lets me do so much of what I love :)

Excited for another year of exploring new places, meeting great people, and maybe (finally) moving somewhere new ;)

AP4 - THE TREADMILL FACTORY

I struggle to find the words to describe what an unbelievable experience that was.

250km team total.
72km by myself.

With a week’s notice I found myself in an experiment that truly tested my physical and mental resilience like nothing else before. The rules were simple - 24 hours, team of 4, one curve treadmill, cover as much distance as possible.

Surrounded by psychedelic sounds and lights we gave it our all and fully devoted ourselves to this unique environment. As if the challenge wasn’t hard enough, halfway through the race, we were one man down due to an injury, meaning the remaining three of us had to cover more distance with less time to rest in-between. Our strategy had to be adjusted and we ended up running on no sleep and low energy, but we didn’t give up and we pushed ourselves to the extreme.

I hit a few low moments, but I wouldn’t have been able to get through them if not the support from the most incredible and inspiring team I could have asked for. I will be forever grateful for sharing those memories with all of you 🫶 @thrshld__

Undoubtedly the hardest thing I’ve ever done. But we keep going.

Until next time 🫡
