Don’t call it a comeback. Call it like it is: the ultimate. This weekend, Derek Does…Books: “The Ultimates - Don’t Call it a Comeback.”

A perfect, compelling time capsule of early-2000s pop culture, paranoia, and priorities, Marvel’s reinterpretation of the Avengers The Ultimates showcases tragic, complicated, and sometimes even unlikeable heroes. However, they’re still heroes at the end of the day. That says something. They’re imperfect. They’re human.

Sometimes that’s all a hero is. Someone trying.

Take a look.

I’ve picked The Ultimates Vol. 1 Super Human (2002) as today’s read.

A modern take on the origins of the Avengers in a new universe, this arc from Mark Millar and Bryan Hitch follows Nick Fury as he bands together superpowered beings to help save the planet from threats both domestic and foreign.

I’ll start with what I did enjoy about this story. The exploration of the Avengers as flawed individuals, with their own weaknesses and fears, was refreshing and highlighted the differences between these characters and their Earth-616 counterparts. I think the art in this comic is great. Bryan Hitch has created a cinematic, photorealistic world, with each panel filled with detail, and I really enjoy the character redesigns. You can see how this comic was a blueprint for the MCU, showing how these characters could be presented and how they might react to the modern day.

There’s quite a bit that didn’t land for me with this comic, though. In Millar’s efforts to modernise the characters, I feel they’re overly edgy and extremely unlikeable. Thor is arrogant, Cap is racist, and all the female characters are written paper-thin or portrayed through an extremely male gaze. The humour and politics have both dated terribly, and there’s far too much cynicism posing as satire that simply doesn’t land. I’d also say the pacing is a slow burn, with most of the action and character development happening in the later issues.

Overall, this is a decent enough reinterpretation of the classic Avengers line-up, but it’s a product of its time that hasn’t aged particularly well. The art, however, more than sets itself apart and is far more enjoyable than the story.

Why would DC Comics put this on a Swamp Thing cover? Published in 1995, Swamp Thing issue 153 explores an alternate reality where the Nazis won World War Two and America exists under their control. When Swamp Thing is asked to destroy this world, he faces an extraordinary moral dilemma. Can the atrocities of the past ever justify the destruction of innocent lives today?

Written by Mark Millar, this disturbing story explores genocide, collective punishment, humanity and the consequences of hatred. With my own Polish family heritage, its message feels particularly personal. No innocent person should ever have to suffer for the crimes of others.

Who gets to name the villain?

A hero in one version of history can be a monster in another. The most interesting stories begin when we let the people they harmed tell their side.

Tomorrow at New York Comic Con, join me for A WALK ON THE DARK SIDE. I’ll talk about writing monsters, the histories buried beneath them, and why we sometimes find ourselves rooting for the person we were told to fear.

I’ll be alongside T.J. Klune, Deena Helm, Bel Banta, and R.J. Valldeperas, with Maddie Martinez moderating.

My novel ROOTED is a USA TODAY bestseller and a Barnes & Noble Best Horror Books of 2026 selection.

“A blood reckoning… Dazzling.”

“A masterful blend of history, horror, and mythology.”
