#29: Not Frodo

Provo friend: Thad

The title of this painting is “Not Frodo” because while I was putting up the woe bubble stickers around Provo, this particular geographical spot had me hiking through some rough terrain, across train tracks, fences, thistles, and a stream. Usually such things wouldn’t deter me, but I was wearing sandals and feeling kind of lazy this particular afternoon, and I remembered that my map of Provo was flawed in the first place, so I reminded myself that I’m not Frodo, and my quest didn’t necessarily warrant wet or itchy feet, so I slapped it on the wheel-well of a rusty trailer in the field. The dull orange shape in this painting comes from the pants of Curtis Mayfield’s self-titled album from 1970, a seminal work fusing soul and funk and political awareness. The novel from my shelf is Gore Vidal’s Myra Breckingridge, published in 1968. Vidal was an influential public intellectual voice, and often ruffled the feathers of his more conservative colleagues. Myra Breckingridge was especially boundary breaking as an early voice for sexually marginalized communities. Something my gay angel brother Thad, knows something about. A couple of months ago, Thad organized, with 5 of his gay friends to throw me a Queer-eye style makeover. Thad is a sparkling combination of brave, crazy-smart, kind, and handsome. This painting was made by Elliana, a student artist who continues to surprise and astound me with her brushwork, her choice of content and sheer volume of paintings and drawings that she has made this year in my class. Ellie is one of those kids who quietly radiates a sweetness and a sense of self-awareness and curiosity that I wish I could share with my non-educator friends who cling to old notions about teenagers being a scourge on society. Personally, I can’t wait for this generation to start running the world.

Half marathon #2 is in the books! You couldn’t ask for a more scenic course than the Canyonlands Half Marathon, which winds through a gorgeous red rock canyon near Moab. As the culmination of four months of careful training, I was pleased that I cut 15 minutes off of my previous half-marathon time from Thanksgiving.

Thanks for @mrmcplad and @dmcbride42 for joining in the… fun? I’m not sure running it was fun, but now it feels like achievement, and that’s fun.

I jumped on #thefrontstepsproject a couple weeks ago and have loved the connection with friends and neighbors even though we have to remain physically distanced. It's also shown me how lucky we are to be ABLE to socially distance ourselves and remained quarantined. I know there are SO, so many who don't have that privilege. Who can't work from home. Who work on the front lines in healthcare. Or who have to choose feeding themselves and family over keeping themselves from exposure. And sadly there are so many packed into prisons and refugees camps across the globe who have no choice and exposure is inevitable. The small annoyances of being "cooped up" in my cozy house are nothing compared to these. It puts everything in perspective, for sure. So I feel very grateful that we GET to distance ourselves, come in close as a family, and wait out this storm together. Be well. 🌿
