Two years ago, I lost someone who meant more to me than he’ll ever know.

Someone I admired. Someone who inspired me. Someone who always made me feel like I belonged in rooms I wasn’t sure I deserved to be in.

@chefjameskent believed in me long before I believed in myself.

I still remember him introducing me to people and saying, “This is Jerry. He’s the @nigelsylvester of running.” Whether we were around athletes, celebrities, chefs, or executives, Jamal always made me feel seen. He never cared about titles. He cared about people.

What inspired me most wasn’t his success. It was the way he loved his family. No matter how busy he was building businesses, leading kitchens, or creating opportunities for others, his wife and kids always came first. He showed up. Every single time.

The day I got the call that he passed, my heart dropped. I had just seen him days before. We were laughing, talking sneakers, and he was joking that he was finally going to start wearing Hokas.

For the last two years, I’ve tried my best to honor the version of me that Jamal saw before I could see it myself. Through running. Through community. Through Crown High. Through showing up for @kellyrunsnyc , the kids, and everyone carrying on his legacy.

When the Knicks won the championship this year around the anniversary of his passing, I couldn’t help but think about him. Orange and blue skies. I know he would’ve been going absolutely crazy.

This year’s memorial runs weren’t just about remembering Jamal. They were about proving that what he built is still growing.

Because when someone plants a seed, it’s up to the community to keep watering the garden.

Thank you to @kellyrunsnyc , @kenthospitalitygroup , @crownshynyc @birdeenyc , @gftcbklyn @bandit @west @jackgilbert_ @on , friends, family, and everyone who came out to celebrate his life. It was never about us. It was about the man who brought us all together.

We’ll keep running.
We’ll keep showing up.
We’ll keep saying his name.

Forever for the Crown.

🧡💙
