@paigeockendon is an art school leader, producer, and self-described human chipmunk. She’s also eighth-generation Essex, with the surname Ockendon to prove it! Paige leads @theotherma TOMA (The Other MA) in Southend, taking over from its founder @emerrrhhhh (big up!). Having previously studied on the course herself, she now helps create an alternative to traditional art school: MA-level art education designed around the realities of artists’ lives, making space for people juggling work, family, caring responsibilities, finances and everything else life throws at them. TOMA is a place to become an artist — and stay an artist. The course welcomes people from all kinds of creative practices, building skills, knowledge, confidence and connections. The curriculum is shaped around the people taking part, so if you want to become a stonemason, why not? Previous guest @joannemorrison72 , the vocal improvisation artist, is a TOMA graduate too. Big up Emma, Paige and the whole TOMA community! We talk about Paige’s journey from studying fine art to working at @metalsouthend in Southend, discovering the incredible breadth of Essex’s arts scene, and finding her creative superpower: ADMIN. Yes, spreadsheets! The magical place where creative ideas become actual projects. Paige is also producing Creative Breaktime, exploring whether creativity can help improve teacher retention in Essex. There’s a lot of love for collaboration over competition, making arts education more accessible, and building a stronger creative community across Essex. TOMA offers a sliding scale of fees, with 70% of places reserved for people from Essex. And the graduation ceremony? You receive a ceramic sausage on a fork. YES, REALLY. Big up TOMA ceramicist Richard Baxter. The Ragga Enforcer aka Jaiden is back in the studio — and if you’ve listened to the podcast before, you’ll know he’s part of the OG Are You Creative? family. He’s been helping us since day one, but he’s also an absolute creative powerhouse and serial entrepreneur in his own right. Nick calls him the Ragga Alan Sugar because Jaiden simply does not stop coming up with ideas. Everything sits under his Night Til Dawn brand, rooted in his East End upbringing and his love of music, culture and community. For Jaiden, authenticity matters — knowing who you are, where you come from, and bringing that into everything you create. As a Trustee of @culture_chelmsford1 , he’s also helping shape the creative scene in Chelmsford. From promoting his first club nights to creating events built around reggae, ragga, soca and calypso, Jaiden is passionate about creating spaces where people can enjoy music, food and culture without needing excessive alcohol or anything else. His events are about inclusivity, discovery and bringing people together. We talk about @hotboxliveevents 's Ragga Food & Vibes, cooking Jamaican food for 60–100 people, block parties that started outside his house, and why music can be one of the best ways to break down cultural barriers. Sangita LOVES bashment, obviously. There’s also a fascinating conversation about resilience, responsibility, code-switching, authenticity and constantly learning new skills. Jaiden approaches everything as a chance to learn — becoming someone who knows “a little about a lot” and using every creative venture to build stability, security and opportunity. Then there’s @raggajaba_punch — his own drink made with natural ingredients including cranberry, carrot juice and turmeric — plus his increasingly hilarious TikTok videos. Pure positivity, pure hustle, and a reminder that you’re never too old to learn something new. Mad the amount of corporate shit around the festival and terrible beer at the bar (Madri 🍻💀)
