“Okuzingiramu” is the Luganda word for entanglement: a state of being caught within relations that cannot be untwined without loss.
The duo exhibition brings together works by Yiga Joshua and Namata Birungi.
The pavilion unfolds as a meditation on life lived within dense, inherited networks of people, materials, histories, and ecologies, under the pressure of unfinished colonial legacies and accelerating environmental change. Set within a site shaped by military power, trade, and imperial circulation, the exhibition reads the present as already burdened by the past and the future as something we are actively entangling ourselves in. History here is not archival; it is a living condition that continues to shape attentiveness.
The artists in Okuzingiramu work with materials and gestures that carry memory rather than monumentality.
Yiga Joshua’s banana-fiber dolls draw on childhood practices of collective play, in which figures are made, shared, and remade. These fragile forms serve as relics of communal imagination, records of touch, repetition, and survival through play and togetherness. Namata Birungi works with palm leaves (nsansa) and raffia (obuso), materials associated with domestic craft and quiet maintenance.
Through weaving and knotting, she produces suspended structures that resemble shelters, networks, or unfinished supports, evoking systems that hold bodies and communities without ever fully revealing themselves.
The works operate as artifacts of an ongoing world rather than documents of a concluded one. Temporally unanchored, Okuzingiramu approaches the present as if seen from a future that has learned, too late, that separation was an illusion.
Entanglement is not framed as catastrophe alone but as a fragile possibility: an ethical invitation to remain with complexity, to practice awareness within different constraints, and to inhabit connection without mastery or forgetting.

Visitors are welcome throughout the Biennale to experience the exhibition and its dialogue between material and perception.

Vodo Arts Society and lab is honored to announce the participation of artists Namata Maria Tereza and Joshua Mulungi Yiga in the second edition of the Malta Biennale, titled CLEAN / CLEAR / CUT. The Biennale will take place across various historical sites in Malta and Gozo from 11 March to 29 May 2026.

The Thematic Pavilion, titled OKUZINGIRAMU, will be on view at Fort St Elmo and the National War Museum. Curated by Wamala Nyanzi, the pavilion presents a powerful reflection on entanglement.

"Okuzingiramu" is the Luganda word for entanglement: being caught in or involved in a complex situation that is difficult to separate from.

Joshua Mulungi Yiga works with banana-fiber dolls, drawing on Ugandan childhood traditions in which children shaped fiber into figures and imagined worlds together. His practice carries this play into the present, treating banana fiber as a record of shared gestures and collective presence.

Namata Maria Tereza works with palm leaves (nsansa) and raffia (obuso), using weaving and knotting techniques rooted in Buganda’s domestic craft traditions. By reshaping these materials into suspended, non-functional forms, she repositions them from private utility objects, exposing a support system and revealing how attentiveness and rest are distributed, strained, and shared.

The Malta Biennale is organised by Heritage Malta, in partnership with Arts Council Malta and in collaboration with the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister and Ministry for Foreign Affairs, the Ministry for National Heritage, the Arts, and Local Government, and with VisitMalta.
