In honor of Cinemalaya 2026 closing just a few days ago, I find myself looking back at our own proud little trilogy of festival milestones, two of which were born when RJ, Real and I were juggling daily TV schedules, coffee, cigarettes and sheer desperation. We began with Bakit Di Mo Sabihin, made in the thick of the pandemic, with Janine Gutierrez and JC de Vera giving performances I still believe deserved even more recognition. Real Florido’s deeply authentic, sign language driven story earned acclaim for its inclusivity and emotional heart, proving that love does not need a voice to be loud.

Then came 1st Ko Si 3rd, our first baby, built almost entirely through the generosity of friends and a budget that demanded miracles. Yet it produced a Cinemalaya Best Actor win for Dante Rivero, a Gawad Urian Best Actress nomination for Nova Villa, and a Best Feature Film win in Canada.

And then Iska, directed by Teddy Boborol, made with so little money that we practically became temporary residents of an urban slum. Ruby Ruiz delivered a powerhouse performance, winning Cinemalaya Best Actress, while Mary Rose Colindres won Best Screenplay and the film took Best Sound. Ruby later won Best Actress at the Harlem International Film Festival and Herat International Women’s Film Festival.

Three films. Three battles. Three reminders of why we do this. As producers, these films taught us that CreaZion’s real strength is protecting raw, uncompromising human stories against all odds. Stories of love, dignity and resilience.

Thank you, Cinemalaya.

Do you remember July, really? I think July just passed. Not theatrically, not with fireworks or some cinematic cumshot. It simply slipped through the calendar like wet paper, leaving behind rain, meetings, deadlines, a boyfriend who occasionally went MIA, and me occasionally remembering that I had a boyfriend at all. We were both busy, or perhaps we were both becoming very good at being busy or liking not seeing each other of late. There were events, dinners, conversations, cars, work, the usual evidence that a life was happening. Except July seemed to be forgettable. Manila kept raining as if even the city had forgotten what month it was. And perhaps that was July’s great mission: nothing happened, therefore EVERYTHING did.

The strange irony is that I did not forget July. I forgot myself. I enrolled at UP - yes! - I am, once again, an acad, a student, a feelingerah talino-talinuhan, aaaahluvet! I immersed myself so completely in work that I exploded into little pieces and called each piece a responsibility. Meeting. Project. Coordination. Another meeting. Another fucking fix. Somewhere between the meeting, my blue school notebook and spreadsheets, I became the background character in my own life. Now July is over, quietly, almost apologetically. Maybe that is the spectacular part. A whole month disappeared and took a little bit of me with it. Or maybe, more perversely, I am still here, just slightly less myself, and slightly more July.

At @zeenmagazineph we say: No you can’t rain on my parade! Despite the downpour we’re able to mount the inaugurial @zeenandtasted Food Festival at the Ayala Malls Market last weekend, August 8-9. It was a 2-day event celebrating the food culture of the youth with curated food choices, coffee rave, culinary talks and a ceremony recognizing this generation’s tastemakers with the Pin Saved Awards. Props to the whole Zeen team🫶🏼

I grew up hearing Tito Boy's unmistakable voice on The Buzz, announcing yet another exclusive that everyone would be talking about the next day. Back then, it felt like the biggest stage an artist could hope for.

Today, seeing Dolly de Leon on Fast Talk after another wave of international projects feels like a beautiful full-circle moment. Just yesterday, she shared the story of her Triangle of Sadness audition on Instagram; a quiet reminder that every breakthrough is built on years of rejection, persistence, and believing in yourself long before the world does.

I've had the privilege of witnessing parts of that journey, and I couldn't be prouder. From years of grinding in the local industry to back-to-back projects beyond our shores, Dolly continues to prove that talent, when matched with grit and grace, knows no borders.

Catch Dolly de Leon LIVE on Fast Talk later today. DDL’s story must be celebrated, and hers is one of the finest.

MOVIE REVIEW: Open Endings (2026) is an unexpectedly moving exploration of friendship, love, and the complicated spaces in between.

The story centers on four women whose romantic histories are interconnected. The film explores the connections that remain even after relationships end. It embraces emotional messiness, as each character navigates questionable decisions and unresolved feelings. It presents their experiences with empathy and understanding, allowing audiences to reflect on the complexities of queer relationships, friendship, and modern adulthood.

Janella Salvador brings warmth and effortless charm, while Jasmine Smith-Curtis delivers the film’s most emotional performance, capturing vulnerability, longing, and grief with sincerity. Klea Pineda and Leanne Mamonong complement the ensemble beautifully, creating a believable dynamic. Their conversations and casual interactions are where the film truly shines. However, the film occasionally struggles with pacing due to its slow-burning approach, which helps build character depth but at times makes the narrative feel drawn out.

Personally against keeping in touch with exes, but by refusing to sensationalize its characters or simplify their experiences, Open Endings presents a thoughtful and quietly powerful reflection on love, identity, and the people we continue to choose despite the complications.

OPEN ENDINGS is now showing in PH cinemas. Rated R-16 by the MTRCB.

Last night’s #MEGABall2026 reminded everyone that fashion and film are kindred arts, both built on character, imagination, and the enduring power of storytelling. For the Fashion + Film edition, it was a privilege to see CreaZion Studios Artists represented by our artists Dolly de Leon, Gabby Padilla, Meryll Soriano, and Charo Santos-Concio, whose MEGA Icon Award was a fitting tribute to a lifetime devoted to elevating Filipino stories. It was an evening where cinema met couture, where elegance carried meaning, and where culture took center stage in its most glamorous form.

Thank you, @archiecarrasco @randolfpalanca Anne and @peeweeisidro , for the warmth, generosity, and impeccable evening.
