We spent two weeks in the foothills of the Catskill Mountains, playing with our new friends, Mister and Violet, and it was a blast! We have amazing memories and look forward to going back to see them again.

We don't talk much about Murdock's reactivity. He was surrendered to the animal rescue that I ran before I retired because, in part, he was becoming dog reactive. He was only five months old at that time. We fostered him with the intention of putting him up for adoption. It took him a long time for him to become comfortable around Tango, although Tango absolutely loved Murdock from the first moment he saw him! When we decided to adopt Murdock, we knew we were in for a very long training project, which has had times of triumph and times of frustration. You know, two steps forward and one step back. Looking back, we can see how far he has come, from taking both of us adults to barely control him on a two block walk to being able to walk both big dogs together.

When we learned that we would be staying in the same small town as one of the accounts we have been following for years, we were excited about meeting them. When she offered to help us with a dog introduction of Murdock to her Dane, Mister, we realized what a great training opportunity it would be for Murdock. Now Murdock and Tango (and us pawrents!) have new friends for life!

For those of you with reactive dogs, we understand. Revel in your victories. You deserve them! And bounce back from the frustrations. It's all part of the journey with a reactive dog. And if you aren't a trainer, consult a trainer with reactive dog experience. Oh, and those of you with non-reactive dogs, have patience with the dogs you meet that are reactive. Hopefully their owners are training them and need your patience.

Audrey Cricket joined us for this pack walk. This was the first time she met Mister, who hadn't met a tiny dog before. He was very curious to figure out how an actual dog fit into such a little body, but Audrey Cricket got fed up with his curiosity. 😄
(Audrey has never snapped at another dog like that, but Mister got her message loud and clear! I think she was just hot and tired that day.)

Can you tell which Dane is Tango and which is Mister? They are a lot alike, not just in appearance but also in personalities. And sweet little Violet, aka Piggie, is just the sweetest girl you can imagine!

Our friends showed us some more local treasures. We walked a trail that goes over a trestle which is 150' tall and 940' long. Standing in the middle gave us breathtaking views of the valley below. When the trestle opened to rail traffic in 1872, it was the highest span bridge in the country. We also visited a covered bridge, and the Widow Jane Mine. Lime was extracted from the mine starting in 1837 that was used to create cement that was used for a number of landmarks including the Brooklyn Bridge and the base of the Statue of Liberty. Siteseeing is much more fun with friends!

We spent another great day with our friends, Mister and Ms. Violet. They showed us the waterfalls at High Falls, NY, and the locks that used to help boats get up the canal. Mules, led by "hoggees" (towboys and towgirls, usually working orphans) walked about 15-20 miles a day pulling the boats through this series of locks. If a mule and hoggee fell into the canal, the mule was always rescued first. The mule path has now been turned into a walking trail. The locks themselves have been preserved, providing a fascinating piece of history! Of course the dogs didn't care a bit about the history, but they really enjoyed each other's company!

Murdock has always had a hard time making friends. Even when we fostered him at the age of only five months, it took him a week to play with Tango. He is sometimes reactive, so we have never been able to let him play with other dogs except Tango. However, @mrservicedog reached out to us as we were headed in their direction and offered to let us try some off leash introductions to see how he would do. Since Mister is balanced and has good introduction skills, we decided this was a great opportunity to give it a try! Murdock was stand-offish at first but as you can see, eventually realized that Mister could be a great friend!

We will be here a couple of weeks and have been enjoying some very fun outings with Mister and his sweet little sister, Ms. Violet.
