On June 14, 2021, I completed cancer treatment for stage four squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue. 5 years ago today. I was officially diagnosed on 3/4 (I thought it was a stubborn canker sore), had insane surgeries on 3/24, and did 6 rounds of chemo and 30 rounds of radiation from 5/3-6/14. To make cancer “fun” (sarcasm intended) I wore different “badass pants” to treatment every day and took a picture, often matching with my mom. I see myself smiling in the pictures and wonder how I did it. A performer’s training coming to good use. It was often the only smile all day.
The pants made me feel powerful. A sense of self in the hospitals where your body starts to feel like a science experiment separate from you.

As my mom, @kellydrablos, shared each day’s picture, I stared receiving literally hundreds of pants in the mail. People near and far carried me through. Above is a snippet of posts from 6/14 where so many friends and family shared pictures with the hashtags #iamcrazypantsforkatiedrablos and #kellydrablosisarockstar. My camera roll is full of screenshots. It’s overwhelming. I am a lucky one who lived and can look back on these moments and feel loved. Deeply.

I had my 5 year cancer scans this week and I am cancer free. Cheers to living fully, loving boldly and standing up for what’s right for the rest of my days.
