Kāryn Taylor’s exhibition 𝙀𝙭𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙞𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙖𝙡 𝙋𝙝𝙮𝙨𝙞𝙘𝙨 is now on until November 8th

‘[Taylor] is interested in the space in-between where together we can experience curiosity. This is ultimately what makes Experimental Physics so compelling. By searching for a space where forms remain open, the artworks precede interpretation.’

𝘈𝘳𝘵 𝘕𝘦𝘸𝘴 says GO SEE • 𝘊𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘳 𝘔𝘺 𝘛𝘩𝘳𝘰𝘢𝘵, a new solo exhibition by SEFTON RANI at The Arts House Trust. Curated by Dina Jezdić, the exhibition evokes the moment before a speech: the clearing of space, breath, and intention. This gesture, calls forth ancestral presence, allowing them to speak through us.

Through burning, stripping, layering, and fusing paint, wood, and found materials, Rani develops what he calls “industrial tapa”—surfaces where pressure, memory and place remain materially inscribed. Creation becomes invocation. Engaging scent, sound, and scale, the exhibition reimagines colonial domestic architecture as a living body, bringing Rani’s new works into dialogue with selected works from The Arts House Trust Collection to trace shifting relations between materiality, geography and time.

“[…] Rani’s sculptural forms are placed alongside works by Tony Fomison and Reuben Paterson, where volcanic landscapes, deep time and creation narratives become entangled. Accompanied by the newly commissioned immersive soundscape H-75-HE-25—a title referencing hydrogen and helium, the elemental composition of the universe following the Big Bang—the space collapses geological, cosmological and human histories into a shared sensory encounter. Fomison’s lifelong engagement with volcanic landscapes, Māori archaeology and the stories embedded within geological formations finds a material dialogue with Paterson’s shimmering evocations of the Piha landscape, where volcanic sand and light become originators and influence […]”

Ngā mihi nui to everyone who joined us on Saturday to hear artist Sefton Rani in conversation with writer and curator Dina Jezdić about the ideas and processes behind Rani’s current exhibition, 𝘊𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘳 𝘔𝘺 𝘛𝘩𝘳𝘰𝘢𝘵.

𝘊𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘳 𝘔𝘺 𝘛𝘩𝘳𝘰𝘢𝘵 was curated by Jezdić as part of The Arts House Trust’s annual Guest Curator Programme, which invites curators to develop exhibitions that brings works from The Arts House Trust Collection into dialogue with contemporary artistic practice.

The exhibition is on view at The Arts House Trust, Pah Homestead, until 15 November.

A big thanks to everyone who attended the artist talk @theartshousetrust yesterday lead by curator extraordinaire @ms.interpretedd

My rough count was 70+ turned up to listen to what we had to say, a mixture of old friends and new ones. We appreciate all of you and we had fun having the discussion we did. I enjoyed Dina being able to pull out lots of information and narrative that I hadn't revealed before.

The exhibition runs until November 15th so there is lots of time to see it even if you aren't based in Auckland.
