Book Review:
The Book " Chattisgarh : The Land of Hidden Mysteries" is the fruit of
Author,Muneeta Aneja's dedicated research, who had covered 80% of the state on her two wheeler and covered more than 125 tourist hotspots with the aim of attracting more tourists to this state and improve the economic lot of the underprivileged people of these parts. The book is easy to read and is studded with 170 + images to make the readers have a mental tour of those places.

The book starts with the Naxal menace that has raised its head in recent past and gave a vivid picture of ambush of a party of Congress leaders and workers in May 2013 while they were passing through Darbha Valley. This is one of the major operations of Naxals in this area where they killed about 28 people including the Congress stalwart Vidya Charan Shukla. This may be known by old timers who followed the events and news then but the author gives a starting fact of the Personal Security Officer of VC Shukla killed himself with the last bullet left regretting his inability to protect his Master. The section on Naxalites covers in detail the onset of Naxalism in the state, the favourable factors, the constraints, successes and struggles of the police. There is a brief mention of " Salwa Judum", a counter combat military force outside police control.
The book traces the historical importance of the region of Chattisgarh , back to Ramayana and Mahabharata periods. The region said to be called as Kosal, and later Dakshin Kosal had the distinction of mothering the mother of Lord Rama. The region contained Dandak forest where Rama with his brother and wife spent more than ten of his 14 year exile. The place is said to be the kingdom of Surpanakha's husband. It once served as the capital of Chedi kings on the banks of Suktimati river. ( Remember Vasu Charitra?) This part is later ruled by Kush, the son of Ram.
Then the author goes on giving the historical perspective, the lineage of kings that ruled...Chedis, Hyhayas, Kalachurs etc. And then there is a tribute paid to the great leaders of the region who sacrificed their lives in freedom struggle but scantily remembered now.

Gender equity can only be achieved if women and men see each other as collaborators rather than competitors. The first step in creating a gender-equitable workplace or society is to address the fundamental problem. "The elimination of gender-based biases and discrimination in the roles that men and women choose". It is critical that we recognize that people develop according to their line of interests as human beings, not just as men or women. A woman could be an excellent cab driver, plumber, or an alpha female dominating the field of "what is being biased as a male dominant sector". Today, we look at women thriving through the fields of Defence, Law Enforcement, Journalism, flying planes, being an astronaut, that may be a male-dominated workplace, but we thrive, because we understand that it is about "potential, skill and interest", rather then "what should or should not be done by a woman". The stigmas centring both the genders need to be bought down. Similarly, a man can be an excellent makeup artist, hairdresser, fashion designer, dancer, and interior decorator, world renowned chef without the weight of judgment hanging over his head. I could have listed an infinite number of solutions to achieve gender equity, but first we must tackle the fundamentals. We must all understand that roles and skills are becoming more diverse, and that the only way to advance is to respect one another rather than undermine one another. We cannot afford to disparage one another for the type of work we do because of our gender in a world where globalization and emerging trends are sweeping the globe. And that is my primary definition of achieving gender equity. Other solutions emerge as we overcome our internal biases and excel in fields that are not centered on a gender-based role. "You have the freedom to be who you want." This is my message for this International Women's Day.
