PERIOD. was born from Project Butterfly, which itself was born from my wish to create a single powerful image with a group of trans bodies. After taking a feminist art course at OCAD and learning about intersectionality, it felt natural for my work to move toward individuals whose identities deserve to be documented, seen, and witnessed. I believe the reason I gravitated toward trans bodies comes from being born and raised in the country with the second largest transgender population in the world, a country that also kills the most, while simultaneously consuming the most trans adult content. That contradiction speaks to the hate directed at those who manage to live their truest selves.

As a Brazilian, I’m heartbroken for those in marginalized communities where violence against the trans community remains so present. As a Canadian, I’m in a privileged position to bring awareness to this community in a way I most likely wouldn’t be able to if I were still in Brazil. As an artist, I believe our legacy lives in the creation we leave behind. So if I die and my work somehow helps bring visibility, dignity, and respect to trans bodies, I’ll die a happy person.

Tysm to everyone who made PERIOD. a reality. We brainstormed together and created a concept that revolves around time; the fact that trans bodies have always existed, regardless of the era. Using a studio filled with vintage furniture and garments made from vintage tapestry and blankets, we aimed to convey the passage of time while juxtaposing it with the modernity of the current bodies, each in their own stage of transition and metamorphosis.

Thank you, Hannah , for taking these BTS shots, your energy was unmatched. Thank you, Ernesto, for killing the makeup and boosting the confidence of everyone in front of my camera. Thank you Reggie for bringing Gorm into this project. Thank you, Marcos, for helping with fans, backdrops, and poses. 🦋 PERIOD 🦋

Projeto Borboleta wasn’t just a campaign or an artistic endeavour, it was a reclamation. A reclamation of image, of space, and most importantly, of narrative.

In a media landscape that too often erases, sensationalizes, or objectifies trans women, Projeto Borboleta created a space where their beauty, dignity, and complexity could be honored on their own terms. These portraits weren’t about transformation for the cis gaze; they were about trans visibility as truth-telling.

This initiative reminds us that when trans women are seen with dignity, not as symbols or statistics, but as full human beings, the world becomes more beautiful. Not because it changed them, but because it finally opened its eyes.

As activist, Julia Serano writes in Whipping Girl: A Transsexual Woman on Sexism and the Scapegoating of Femininity (2007), trans women “are often viewed as less legitimate, less authentic, or less human.” Projects like Borboleta resist that narrative through visual empowerment, showing that trans femininity is not something to be corrected or pitied, but celebrated in its own right.

This is not just art. This is affirmation. This is visibility with purpose. And in today’s cultural climate, that is nothing short of revolutionary.
