🚨 BREAKING NEWS | #ELYTON

WHITE HOUSE REJECTS CENTRAL ALABAMA WATER SPONSORSHIP AFTER OBJECTION FROM ELYTON PASTOR

@centralalabamawater wanted to sponsor the President’s Classic.

Rev. Michael Jordan had a problem with that.

Jordan, pastor of New Era Baptist Church on Cotton Avenue in the historic Elyton community, questioned whether an entity involved in ongoing litigation affecting Birmingham residents should be allowed to attach its name and money to an event designed, in part, to celebrate and benefit that same community.

The White House agreed. Immediately.

Sources say Central Alabama Water will not be accepted as a sponsor while significant litigation involving the utility remains unresolved.

The decision is now creating discussion well beyond the President’s Classic.

Because Jordan’s objection raised a bigger question:

Should unresolved litigation with a community matter when deciding who gets to sponsor an event celebrating that community?

For the President’s Classic, the answer was yes.

And Alabama’s corporate and political communities are paying attention.

LEAKED FROM 📁 THE ELYTON FILES @magiccityclassic

By @ms_kstone | Urbanham News

For generations, Legion Field has been the center of Magic City Classic weekend.

This year, some of the weekend’s biggest moments will happen directly across the street.

The Elyton Arts Center will officially open Friday, October 16, with the inaugural President’s Classic—featuring President @woodfinforbham and a headline performance by @jayz.

The four-story complex sits across Graymont Avenue from Legion Field, connecting the football game with the concerts, receptions, meetings and cultural programming surrounding it.

The center includes a performance hall, galleries, rehearsal studios, classrooms, meeting spaces, offices and a multistory glass lobby overlooking Legion Field. Its terraces and public plaza face the stadium, allowing the two venues to operate as one larger Classic weekend campus.

The project grew from a vision shared by President Woodfin—identified as “Vulcan” by the Secret Service—and private investors (list to be published) who believed the Magic City Classic could become the centerpiece of a larger cultural and economic institution.

“The vision was simple,” Woodfin said. “Build something worthy of the people who make the Magic City Classic what it is. Build it close enough to Legion Field that the two venues can operate together, and build it to serve the community long after Classic weekend is over.”

The mayors of Birmingham and Elyton endorsed the public-private project.

The President’s Classic will be the first major event inside the new venue. @dcalloway will serve as emcee. @genehallman1 will introduce President Woodfin and Elyton’s mayor for their joint appearance onstage. Jay-Z will begin his performance immediately afterward.

Year-round programming will include concerts, theater, exhibitions, youth programs, community meetings, private events and educational partnerships.

@legionfield will remain the home of the Magic City Classic.

But beginning this year, the weekend will have a new room directly across the street.

Two different conversations.

Two different cities.

And as far as I know, no connection between them.

Danielle Hines and I had a private conversation about Birmingham.

Period.

Meanwhile, somewhere else, somebody was pushing an entirely different story:

Danielle Hines. Elyton. Kendra Woodfin.

Nobody overheard Danielle and me.

Nobody misunderstood what we said.

Nobody got the Elyton story from me.

Somebody created it independently.

And while that story was moving through political circles, something very real was happening in Elyton.

Kendra needs five City Council votes for her redevelopment package.

She may have three.

Somebody is talking to Council members.

And there’s another redevelopment proposal out there.

So now there are two questions:

Who created the Danielle story?

And who is working the Council?

Maybe those roads eventually meet.

Maybe they don’t.

But right now, they’re two different roads.

ELYTON.

Watch. Read. Listen.

MONEY FROM HEAVEN?

ELYTON — Sunday-morning traffic turned into chaos after an armored truck overturned on the Elyton Expressway, sending an undetermined amount of cash blowing across several lanes of traffic.

The crash occurred shortly after 8:00 a.m. when the truck apparently struck a concrete barrier and overturned. The impact damaged its rear compartment, releasing bags of currency onto the highway.

Witnesses said motorists began stopping almost immediately. Several people abandoned their vehicles and scrambled across the expressway collecting money as it blew through traffic. Some were reportedly dressed for Sunday church services.

“I saw money falling out of the sky,” one driver told Urbanham News. “People didn’t even look for traffic. They just started running.”

Police closed both sides of the expressway as officers attempted to recover the cash and clear the scene. Authorities have not disclosed how much money the truck was transporting or how much remains missing.

The truck’s driver and security officer were transported to an Elyton hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening.

Elyton police are warning anyone who removed money from the scene that the cash remains the property of the armored transport company. Investigators are reviewing traffic cameras, cellphone videos and vehicle license plates.

Anyone possessing money recovered from the highway has been instructed to surrender it at an Elyton Police Department precinct.

No arrests have been announced.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

KENNEDI’S STORY

Kennedi Stone is a reporter for Urbanham News.

And Elyton is her city.

She knows its politics. Its neighborhoods. Its personalities. Its secrets. She knows who has power, who wants it—and who would rather nobody ask how they got it.

Kennedi has sources. She follows rumors. She asks questions. And when somebody tells her there’s nothing to see, that’s usually when she starts looking harder.

There’s also Iva.

Kennedi knows he hears things. She knows he knows people. And she knows there will be times when getting the story means figuring out what Iva isn’t telling her.

Sometimes he’ll be her source.

Sometimes he’ll be her friend.

And sometimes… he may be part of the story.

Because in Elyton, politics is personal, everybody knows somebody, and the truth depends on who you ask.

Kennedi Stone covers Elyton.

And if something is happening in this city, she intends to find out why.

I wanna say 💕THANK YOU!💕 to every person who has sent bday wishes via social media, phone call, text and/or in-person. I had a great weekend with some of the people that mean the most to me.

Year 38 was one of the most challenging year to date 🙌🏾BUT GOD🙌🏾 He kept me and that’s more than enough to be grateful for.

#MCC24 owes me nothing but it’s still my bday week so I’m accepting all lunch/dinner dates and the doors or the CashApp and Apple Pay are open 🤭😉
