Join SFS at the Homecoming Parade this weekend!

SFS will be marching with EIU’s Muslim Student Association to show solidarity for the people of Palestine. Even though the Palestinian genocide persists, we, EIU students, are still thinking of the children, women, and men who are being murdered by Israel every day.

MSA will also be making signs on Friday, October 23, at 5pm, at EIU’s Cultural Center. The Cultural Center is located across the street from Old Main at 1525 7th Street.

EIU's Public Relations Student of the Week is junior Humaira Ibrahim from Decatur, Illinois! Humaira also serves as the President of the Muslim Student Association.

Why did you choose Public Relations?

I chose PR because it is the perfectly balanced major for creative control in a professional setting.

What do you like most about studying and doing PR?

I really like how the projects in my classes give me real-life scenarios to think outside the box and many useful skills to utilize.

What are your career goals?

My career goals are to be in a role with creative control, allowing me to showcase the artistic and professional skills I have learned throughout my years at EIU.

How are you engaged on campus (or, What do you do when you are not in class)? If you are part of an RSO and/or hold a position with that RSO, please share.

I am currently the President of the Muslim Student Association where we are recently teaming up with Booth Library.

What pieces of advice would you give to a future PR student?

Share how you are with yourself and learn to be forward with how you communicate.

International students came together to celebrate and show pride in their cultures during Global Culture Night at the EIU Martin Luther King Jr. University Union on Saturday evening.
Hosted by the Association of International Students, the event was held to demonstrate to international students that there is a safe space for them at Eastern and to showcase their cultures to the EIU and Charleston communities.
The event started with a Kahoot about the various cultures and countries around the world that Eastern’s international students come from.
Throughout the night, there were speeches from international students about the United States and the culture shock they experienced when moving here.
Performances by a dance team of international students also took place, and they sometimes encouraged audience participation.
Anthony Amotoe Bondzie, a graduate assistant specializing in energy management, performed a traditional drum dance called “Jema,” which is about bringing the community together and remembering home.
Amotoe Bondzie said that there is no discrimination when performing the dance.
“It’s all about seeing each other, having a feeling of being in a group,” Amotoe Bondzie said.
One of the event organizers was AIS President Krishna Daravath, a grad student in technology and MBA, who said he loves doing these events for the international community to show different stories and cultures to people from the surrounding area.
“These are the kind of events that will encourage internationals to look up to EIU,” Daravath said.
One of the other organizers was International Student Coordinator Benjamen Rienbolt.
“Currently, we have 56 countries represented at EIU this semester alone,” said Rienbolt.

Thank you everyone for joining our film screening and discussion of The Encampments! Be sure to join our reading group next week in Coleman 1661 at 6pm to keep the discussion on Palestine going. We will be studying “The Strategy for the Liberation of Palestine” 📚 No prior reading required!

The Encampments film demonstrates how community power has the force to reveal administrative hypocrisy and institutional power. From the censorship of student voices to the assassinations of journalists in Gaza, the cost of telling the truth about Palestine has never been higher. Now more than ever we need to study and learn the lessons from across the student movement. We will not stop and we will not rest until Palestine is free! ✊

As Israel intensifies its forced starvation and genocide of Palestinians, now more than ever is the time to study the history of Palestine and the movement today. Join Students for Socialism and the Muslim Student Association at EIU for a free screening of The Encampments followed by a reflective discussion!

The Encampments takes viewers inside America’s student uprising with incredible intimacy and urgency. Following Palestinian student leaders like Mahmoud Khalil and tracing the history of Palestine’s occupation from its inception, the film showcases students across the globe heeding Palestinians’ call for collective action while highlighting the decades of resistance on the ground through the Great March of Return, both Intifadas, and the current resistance movement.

Come learn about the student resistance movement for Palestine and discuss how to build the movement here at Eastern.
