When I asked a student (one of the lowest support ones) if they were stressed “taking care” and supporting a mid-high autistic classmate in class on their own, they replied no, and was happy to continue to do so (read the end to see what they said to me). It was exactly how I felt when I started this job, as not just my colleagues, but even the students look up to me. My entire life, I’ve been seen as “less capable” than others due to my weaknesses and special needs, given less opportunities and feeling bad that I needed more help from others. But now in an environment that allows me to “fail and pick myself up”, create a safe space and take off the “mask” I always wear, while constantly being given opportunities to learn and grow, I have never felt this much pride in myself. I’m so used to getting beaten down, that to be “looked up” by everyone (students, their caregivers and colleagues too) allows me to be more confident, more joyous, and more appreciative to everything I have.
Fun fact is that half the class is my age/older than me, yet they all look up to me like a “motherly figure” (two even wished me Happy Mother’s Day!)
•••
Context: I am a trainer and training executive in an inclusive music school where we run a vocational training programme for people with special needs to enter the music and media industry workforce. People say TGIF and Monday Blues, but for me it’s Friday Blues and TGIM (Thank goodness it’s Monday) as I teach and care for 9 students with special needs for 5 hours straight ALONE. These special needs range from all kinds, intellectual disabilities to autism to many other disabilities most people wouldn’t know about. To make things worse, I have special needs myself (ADHD and anxiety/depression btw), which makes me wonder if I can barely “handle” myself, how can I support these students as well?
Follow along to see if I can survive a fast paced, pragmatic society in an environment that is not like any other ❤️

What a beautiful way to kick off Autoimmune Diseases Awareness Month (March)! 💜

Our hearts were full as we gathered at @madroaster in @enablingvillage for our ADSG OpenMic yesterday to commemorate Rare Disease Day. It was a day to honor the strength and resilience of our community—and the energy was something special.

We were moved to tears and smiles by brave individuals living with rare and autoimmune conditions who stepped up to the mic to share their souls through poetry and music. We also had a stunning pop-up art gallery featuring works by our very own members, which beautifully captured the depth of our lived experiences in ways words sometimes can’t. It wasn‘t just about our personal journeys, either; we were grateful to have a pediatrician join us to share his heart and his work supporting children living with complex conditions. It was a poignant reminder of the care and advocacy that goes into every stage of life with a rare disease.

We laughed, we listened, and for a few hours, the weight of our journeys felt a little lighter because we were sharing it together. Closing the evening with @wadyandhisguitar ‘s rendition of ‘Superman (It’s Not Easy)’ followed by a 40-strong community sing-along of Mariah Carey’s ‘Hero’ was a moment we won’t soon forget. That is exactly what community looks like! 🎶✨

We want to send a massive shoutout to the founding members and friends from @mnda_sg , Pulmonary Hypertension SG, @lupus.sg , @msssingapore , and Neurofibromatosis Society Singapore who came down to stand with us. Your presence and support reminded us that while our conditions may be rare, we are never walking this path alone.

A huge thank you to Mad Roaster’s Slow Bar for hosting us with so much warmth, and to @msacademy.sg for providing the professional sound equipment and expertise that made our voices soar. Living with these conditions isn’t easy, but yesterday reminded us all that there is a hero in every one of us. Let’s keep this momentum and light shining all through March! 💪🌈

To commemorate Rare Disease Day, the ROJ Music Interest Group dedicates this cover of What a Wonderful World to all who are bravely battling illness and the caregivers who stand beside them. Stay strong, and live strong.

Recital of Joy (ROJ) is a monthly community music group at MS Academy by Music Solutions, where music brings people together to support wellbeing, foster connection, and build an inclusive, caring community for all — including caregivers and persons with additional needs.

This month, we warmly welcome a new friend, Enoch, a visually impaired music enthusiast, as we share music and moments of joy together. 💛

👉 To find out more about ROJ or how to join a session, drop us a message (WhatsApp: +65 8020 4855) or visit us at MS Academy (20 Lengkok Bahru, #01-14 Enabling Village Canopy Block, Singapore 159053)
