POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

🦄 Purple cabin’s the best 💜

AAD Camp Discovery 2026 was life-changing. It’s hard to put this incredible opportunity into words, but I’m going to try.

I had such a ✨magical✨ time getting to relive some of my fondest childhood memories while helping the coolest group of 10- and 11-year-old girls have the same carefree camp experience I was fortunate enough to have.

As physicians and healthcare practitioners, the view we get of our patients’ lives is often confined to a cramped exam room, and the story we begin to unravel is cut short by our limited schedules. At camp, I got to see these beautiful young people build friendships and conquer challenges, hear their hopes and dreams, share in their laughter and tears, and ultimately watch them flourish in a space where they felt genuinely safe and accepted.

The campers got to be around kids and adults who could relate to the struggles of living in a world that only goes skin deep, and man, there is something so special about us all coming together to nurture and support the parts of ourselves that others may try to isolate or shame us for.

I will hold all of my campers and co-counselors, and the memories we made together, so close to my heart for the rest of my life. Thank you to @aadmember, @campforallfoundation, and everyone involved in making this past week an unforgettable experience filled with so much love and light. 💜

I can’t wait for next year.

I often say camp is the most powerful medicine I can prescribe -- it is nothing short of life-changing, transformative, and magical. At camp, you don't see these kids as patients. You see them as kids who just want to be kids... who have hopes, fears, dreams, just like everyone else... who are just trying to survive in a world that doesn't always understand, accept, or welcome them. But over the course of the week, as you sit quietly back and observe with wonder and awe, you watch as these kids, in the safe environment of camp, transform from being shy and quiet and unsure of who they are to stretching out of their comfort zones, challenging themselves in new ways, discovering their big personalities, their independence, their confidence, making new friends and empowering themselves with the knowledge that they are not alone.

What a privilege it is to bear witness to the magic of what happens when these kids discover what brings them joy 🤩

This year, we had a special guest Dr. Sandra Lee a.k.a. Dr. Pimple Popper! Thanks for visiting Camp Discovery Texas and raising awareness about this incredible resource and experience for kids with visible skin differences. And thank you to all the volunteers and staff at our camp, our sister camps, and at Camp For All for making this another year to remember! 🙏🏽

All this in just the last day and a half!!

But at least a year of prep for the wonderful dermatologists, counselors, and staff who make Camp Discovery such a special, unforgettable and most importantly, a SAFE PROTECTED space for these young campers who live every day with physically and emotionally debilitating chronic skin conditions. They have campers here who have xeroderma pigmentosa, erythropoietic porphyria, bullous disorders, alopecia, vitiligo, hidradenitis, psoriasis, eczema… But for one week they leave the worries of their skin conditions at home and come to Camp Discovery to just be kids! Camp is truly transformative for the kids but also for those that help these kids to feel protected and comfortable to try new things, make new (who become lifelong) friends, and experience a week they will never EVER forget. Most of them come back every year, as do the counselors and dermatologists who make this Camp a success. Many campers are the future counselors! It’s astounding to me the positive impact that this week has on so many people.

You may not know…
Camp Discovery is completely FREE for the campers! (Thanks to support from the American Academy of Dermatology) @aadskin1 @aadmember
You need a dermatologist to refer you to the camp (but this just requires an email or phone call for them)!

And for the parents of the campers it’s peace of mind that many of their kid’s counselors are dermatologists and derm residents who are helping the kids take care of their skin conditions which can often be complicated. For example, campers with xeroderma pigmentosa and erythropoietic porphyria can only get sun exposure in very small controlled doses. This can be complicated at a summer camp (!) but these wonderful volunteer dermatologists make it work so beautifully!

I love these campers, I love the staff and derms who work so hard to make this successful, and I’d really love more people to know about #campdiscovery which has camps scattered around our nation.
Please ask your dermatologist to refer you to a camp. You will have an experience like no other ❤️❤️❤️

See you next time, Camp Discovery!!

When students ask me how to develop their interest in pediatric dermatology, I say do two things: one, go to a @societypedsderm meeting where you get to meet colleagues who will become family and two, volunteer at @aadskin1 Camp Discovery, a summer camp program for kids affected by chronic or severe skin conditions.
