Lads day out in Split

On the sixth day of Christmas, founding member Jenny reflects on her highlight this year …

“Six years ago I became part of Queen’s Promenade Friends and the highlight of my time so far with our group was in 2025 when we were honoured with a visit from HRH The Duke of Edinburgh who came and opened our newly planted Athelstan Garden.

In advance of garden open day (long before we knew he was visiting) we made bunting from donated fabrics to decorate the area around Athelstan Garden and the further one mile stretch of the Queen’s Promenade that we tend. On two glorious Saturdays we took our sewing machines into the Pocket Park and set-to sorting material, cutting, stitching and ironing. This shared job with lots of laughter, tea and biscuits has reinforced camaraderie and friendship between us beyond measure. We now have shared memories of this remarkable day stored away for another special event.”

We couldn’t not open our toilets too! Probably one of the more unusual places Natrio have played at - and opened! 😂

Promtastic! started with the opening of Bandstand Garden. With thanks to our special guest, Mike the Town Crier @mseigel7 and volunteer project manager Clive giving a speech. You can read Mike’s speech on our blog. And thank you to @natrioensemble for playing on the 1893 bandstand!

With Neighbourhood Community Infrastructure Levy (NCIL) funding, the following projects took place: (1) the raised seating area, formerly used as a bandstand, repaired and refurbished, (2) the collapsed retaining walls rebuilt all along the prom and (3) the wretched toilet block refurbished. The Garden, plants and arch to the fairy and long tiger trail in the Bamboo Woodland Trail were funded by a generous donation from Surbiton Farmers’ Market @surbitonfarmersmarket. Thank you. Our volunteers also painted the benches in colours to match the #qpfmural

Thank you to Nick, Joseph and Will from trumpet trio Natrio @natrioensemble for playing at Promtastic! And helping us open our gardens, and loo, with such fanfare! 🎺🎉

And probably the most varied spaces you’ve opened! There was a Royal welcome to HRH the Duke of Edinburgh for the opening of Athelstan Garden where he unveiled a commemorative plaque and planted a tree, playing on the renovated bandstand (which dates back to 1893) and opening Bandstand Garden with the Towncrier @mseigel7, and the most unusual, our new renovated toilets too!

Thank you to Ben @thamesfestivaltrust @thamesconcerts for organising everything too! 🙏🏻

We’ve had quite a few new followers and visits to our social media accounts after our Royal visit so we thought we’d say hello, welcome and to introduce the group 👋🏻

We had to send a briefing to the Palace about the group, Athelstan Garden and bios of the representatives of the group so I thought I’d replicate it on our website so do take a look and explore our gardens: Link in bio.

We rely on donations for all our work. Please give generously. Use the Donate button on our website or Link in our bio. Thank you 🙏🏻💚

📸 @edmondtsekm - thank you for these fab photos 🤩

We met Mike and Wendy 10 years ago on a croquet field in the Cotswolds. Every so often we are in the same place ( we’ve been together in Monaco, our house,a pub in Richmond U.K. and last in Bali 3 years ago for about 30 minutes!)and enjoy meeting again wherever for an always delightful catch up.

Some of the volunteers attended the @rbkmayor’s charity gala in support of @habsandheritage. However, we did feel underdressed without our hi-vis vests! 🤣

Thank you to @rbkmayor for featuring the Friends groups in Kingston so heavily in your Kingston through the ages presentation and history talks from the Tipstaff and Town Crier @mseigel7. It’s great to have community recognition! 🤩

And what a coincidence that the battle for the Heads and Tails game was between the Mayor’s daughter and the next Mayor of Kingston, Noel Hadjimichael (video 11).

A fun evening which hopefully raised a lot of money for a great charity, @habsandheritage 💚 And if you’d like to support them, do check their website for donation details or nominate them in the £1000 donation draw: https://movementforgood.com/index.php?cn=1140872&ct=environment_and_climate&i=1740390639-94637.gif&utm_source=holiday+card&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=M4G2025card&utm_id=M4G2025card#nominateACharity Link in Stories.

Such a great day swimming in the Laguna hotel pools, the Java sea, meeting up briefly with our British buddies, Mike Seigel and Wendy, who just got off of our ship, and being awed by beautiful Balinese nature and Viking’s, Orion.
