MEDAIGENCY Meets Lebanese Civil Defense to Explore AI Solutions for Operational Needs

The MEDAIGENCY team visited the headquarters of the Lebanese Civil Defense (LCD), member of the project’s Stakeholders Board, to discuss how the AI-powered solutions currently under development could support its work in emergency preparedness and response.

Representing MEDAIGENCY were Dr. Imad Elhajj, Dr. Daniel Asmar, and Mrs. Aline Germani from the American University of Beirut, who met with the Director General Brigadier General Imad Khreish and Eng. Gilbert Zahm from technical team at LCD.

The meeting focused on identifying which solutions could best address LCD’s needs and operational realities, considering how the tools could fit within existing workflows and respond to practical challenges faced by emergency teams. These discussions help lay the groundwork for piloting relevant solutions in operational settings and preparing for their potential adoption within LCD’s systems and practices.

Through these solutions, MEDAIGENCY aims to support the Lebanese Civil Defense and other emergency actors in strengthening preparedness, making informed decisions, and improving response and recovery efforts. Engagement with the professionals who may use these tools is essential to ensuring that their development reflects institutional needs and supports their future adoption.

Preparing a successful energy pilot starts with close collaboration!

The STORM team at the American University of Beirut (AUB) recently visited the project’s campus pilot site alongside representatives from AUB’s Safety, Grounds, Energy, and Facility Management units, as procurement for pilot implementation approaches completion.

The visit provided an opportunity to review site conditions and coordinate preparations, aligning technical planning with campus operations, safety, and environmental and site management needs.

By bringing research expertise together with the experience of AUB’s operational teams, STORM is laying the groundwork for a pilot that will demonstrate seasonal thermal energy storage in Lebanon and contribute practical knowledge for sustainable heating across the Mediterranean.

Thank you to all participating AUB units for their support and continued coordination.

"Economic recovery cannot be measured by growth alone. We also have to consider the environmental cost of that growth, and whether today's choices leave more, not less, problems for future generations to solve."
