How do we get people to care about conservation? The answer is easier than you think.

Invite them outdoors.

Hear us out.

It’s hard to convince a group of people that our environment needs saving if they never get to experience it. Inviting someone to camp, go on a hike, or spend a day at the lake can leave a lasting impression of their outdoor experience.

Through those positive experiences, they can become advocates for keeping our lands protected so that others can experience the outdoors the way they did.

You might’ve heard of 40 acres and a mule, but what does it really mean?

In this week’s episode, co-host Alison Mariella Désir @alisonmdesir sits down with Jade Stevens @msjadesaid, executive director and co-founder of 40 Acre Conservation League.

Inspired by the unfulfilled promise of the 40 acres and a mule policy, Stevens' leadership imagines a radical future where land is stewarded by those formerly denied access all those years ago, up through today.

The 40 Acre Conservation League is California’s first Black-led land conservation organization.

To hear more of this conversation and learn more about Stevens' work, listen to the latest episode of Earthmovers OUT NOW on all podcast platforms and YouTube.

NEW EPISODE! Co-host Alison Mariella Désir @alisonmdesir is joined by Jade Stevens @msjadesaid, Executive Director and Co-Founder of the 40 Acre Conservation League, California’s first Black-led land conservation organization.

Through her conservation work with the League, Stevens aims to increase public access to land for underrepresented groups while protecting it.

In this conversation, Alison and Jade discuss topics of what land conservation is, land trusts, and how expanding access to public lands can help raise awareness of conservationism for everyone.

Jade also discusses the origins of the League's name, a reference to the unfulfilled promise by the US government after the Civil War to provide 40 acres and a mule to formerly enslaved African Americans.

This conversation is so good!

After a summer spent chasing miles across the Midwest, #OneLove was everything my soul needed. 🍑❤️

Nearly 2,000 cyclists came together in Fairburn, GA for the 20th Anniversary @macc_onelovecentury weekend, and there was something powerful about looking around and seeing myself reflected everywhere.

For once, I wasn’t the exception. I was the standard.

Different ages. Different cities. Different clubs, but all connected by two wheels. It felt less like a cycling event and more like the biggest family reunion/hangout ever.

I caught up with friends from across the country, finally hugged people I’d only been able to cheer for through a screen, and made new connections that already felt familiar.

And the joy didn’t stop when we got off the bikes.

I walked through Sweet Auburn and visited Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birth home, explored Centennial Olympic Park, ate what might legitimately be the best bread pudding I’ve ever had from The Food Shoppe and sat down in College Park for brown sugar glazed salmon and mashed potatoes at family-owned @po5atl 😮‍💨🤌🏽

On the bike, I skipped the century and chose the metric, watched my teammates both land on the podium in Sunday’s crit, and still managed to stack 125 miles over the trip.

Georgia became state #️⃣1️⃣9️⃣ on my 50×50 journey, but this one gave me something miles alone could never measure.

Community. Culture. Belonging.

Some states I’ll check off and keep moving.

Georgia? Yeah…y’all are definitely getting me back next year! 🤗🍑🖤❤️💛💚

🎉The first ever One Love Crit kicked off during the One Love Century 20th Anniversary celebration on September 6, 2026. 🎉

A TIME WAS HAD!!

With One Love vibes and energy; the park in Grantville, Georgia was full of supportive clubs and vendors, dedicated racers, and enthusiastic spectators of the sport.

From start to finish this day will be a moment in time, that I’ll never forget, and more importantly that I hope to replicate.

A total over $10,000 went out to our racers that Sunday in addition to prizes for every racer to hit steps on the podium. Trophies, medals, winner jerseys,ZIPP wheel sets, Wahoo rollers, gift baskets, tshirts, hats, etc pool sets, subscriptions… and more.

Thanks to everyone that came out to celebrate with MACC and to watch the races.

A very special thank you for each and every sponsor/partner that contributed to making our first race an amazing success. Without your engagement, we could’ve never gifted our racers the way that we did. ❤️💛💚🖤

Georgia showed us some Southern heat and a GOOD time.

PWR’s first time at MACC One Love Century was unforgettable. We enjoyed the rides, food and race-day activities, it was a whole experience.

Shout out to all of the women who pinned up for the inaugural One Love Crit. That course was challenging, hot and technical, so we had to sweeten the pot with a $200 prime. 😎

Super big THANK YOU to @metroatlantacyclingclub (and VP @emdamour2021 !) for 20 years of creating such a special event and bringing cyclists together from all over. We got to ride hard and eat good, meet new faces, and catch up with a few of our favorites along the way. 🫶🏾

The cycling community really showed up, and we were happy to be part of it. Can’t wait to roll out to the A again!
