On this World Mental Health Day, I want to give flowers to the first therapist I ever knew: my husband, Dr. Michael Chan-Frazier, LPC. 🫶🏽🩵

Long before mental health became a trending topic, had a hashtag, a social media talking point, he was quietly doing the work. For more than 25 years, he has helped children, couples, and families navigate life’s hardest moments through creativity and compassion.

Little did he know, he would also change the trajectory of my life. Michael entered my world during a critical season and became the first person to encourage me to seek therapy. I still remember talking to him on the phone as I walked toward the yellow house - the counseling center on campus. He helped me turn my tears into courage as I opened the door to something completely new. That moment changed my life in ways I couldn’t yet imagine.

I watched him grow in his calling and earn his PhD in psychology. I remember often falling asleep while he worked on his dissertation! And something I will always hold close: 𝙈𝙮 𝙞𝙣𝙩𝙧𝙤𝙙𝙪𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙩𝙤 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙖𝙥𝙮 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙖𝙡 𝙝𝙚𝙖𝙡𝙩𝙝 𝙬𝙖𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙧𝙤𝙪𝙜𝙝 𝙖 𝘽𝙡𝙖𝙘𝙠 𝙢𝙖𝙡𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙖𝙥𝙞𝙨𝙩. Representation matters. His presence matters. 🤎

Today, I celebrate not only the therapist you are, but the husband, father, and human that you are. Our children will grow up knowing that caring for their mental health is just as important as caring for their physical health. They will know that asking for help is a strength and that they can dream boldly because they have you in their village.

My love - you have spent more than 25 years helping others find their way. I hope you know that you have been a guiding light in mine, too. I am so proud of you, so grateful for the work you do, and even more grateful that I get to do life with you. Happy World Mental Health Day. 🤎
