📚✨️Lasting Impressions Tag✨️📚 1. A book you think about often? 💜Sister Outsider by Audre Lorde is a book I think about almost daily. Lorde's essays have helped shape the way I see the world and how I understand my place within it as a disabled queer woman, and not a day goes by that I don't remember her lasting impact. 💚George Orwell's Homage to Catalonia is an insightful look at Orwell and his personal experiences going from a war reporter to antifascist soldier that has stuck with me during these turbulent times. 2. A character you think of often? 💜Cara Romero of Angie Cruz's How Not to Drown in a Glass of Water surprised me by the depth of her humanity. She is so flawed yet so committed to becoming a better person. 💚Dalinar Kholin from The Stormlight Archives holds a special place in my mind for what it means to grow into a better version of yourself. True change takes effort and often discomfort, but is ultimately worth it. 3. A book you'd love to read again for the first time? 💚💜Reading How to Lose the Time War for the first time was such a singular experience that we both wish we could relive over again! This book is a true masterpiece of sci-fi romance that is as breathtaking as it is unique. 4. A book you'd love to see adapted? 💜A Psalm for the Wild Built by Becky Chambers is one that I can easily see being adapted into a contemplative and cozy visual world. 💚City of Brass has romance, political intrigue, action, magic, and amazing characters all wrapped in a unique setting outside the scope of standard Western fantasy. It'd be such a breath of fresh air on screen! 5. A book you'd love to re-read? 💜💚We both feel like doing a re-read of Parable of the Sower at the same time as the events that happen within the novel would be particularly poignant. 6. A book you'd love to read based on its reviews? 💜Hands-down N.K. Jemisin's Broken Earth trilogy. This is a series I've heard nothing but rave reviews about, and I'm constantly kicking myself for not yet checking it out! 💚Blood Over Bright Haven is such an interesting premise, more intrigue and discussion than swords and shields. Plus, I'm a sucker for unique magic systems. 💜Tsp&💚Tbsp

📚25 in '25📚 Q: What books in this spread would you want to buddy-read this year? What backlist books (so not '25 releases) are you excited for? And capping out my flurry of posts the past several days (meaning I won't post again until June), here is my 25 in '25 to start the year off right. The theme this year is "Catch-Up." A majority of these appeared in my previous X in X posts (with "Salvage the Bones" and "Sorrow and Bliss" the only two needed to finish my 23 in '23, haha), and my "Book of Destiny" stories that everyone looks forward to will focus solely on this list. The list, in alphabetical order by title: 🌳 An American Marriage 💙 August Blue 💼 Behold the Dreamers 🦢 The Book of Goose 🧪 Chemistry 🌃 City of Night Birds 🎨 The Dutch House 🧩 Elena Knows 🌎 Everything Here Is Beautiful 🚢 The Great Divide 🌸 Hello Beautiful 🏠 The House of Eve ✍️ How to Say Babylon 🦋 In the Time of Butterflies 📜 Independence 🎭 The Laughter ✈️ No Light to Land On 🚂 Peaces 🐕 Salvage the Bones 📖 The Secret Book of Flora Lea 👫 Someone Like Us 🌤️ Sorrow and Bliss 🎼 Symphony of Secrets 🌉 There Is a Rio Grande in Heaven 🕊 We Are Not Free I was vacillating on this list until the very end, and there are a bunch more that I'm putting here in case you feel any of these should be ones I get to in '25 also: Adelaide And So I Roar Beautyland Elsewhere The Fraud Gone Like Yesterday Goodbye Vitamin Holding Pattern A House for Alice I Could Live Here Forever Kaleidoscope Little Monsters The Many Lives of Mama Love Martyr! Mercury Migrations My Name Is Iris A Quitter's Paradise Rental House Same Bed, Different Dreams Stay True The Storm We Made When We Fell Apart The Wren, The Wren And that's all for now! Not a Best of 2023 list — though, hopefully, several of these are on my Best of 2024! These are the 12 top picks by you for my #12booksin12months challenge (swipe to see them in order of most votes—the top five had seven each). Hat tip to @bretts.book.stack for the idea to limit them to books already waiting on my shelves. A few that didn’t make it in the top 12 are still high priorities for me (Erdrich, Quiet and French Braid) but these 12 will be touchstones throughout the year and I’m excited about each of them! Any recommendations for a particular season best suited to a favorite you see here? ❄️🌷😎🍁 I’ll tag the first commenter for each of these in the image here, and tag everyone who upvoted that title when I review it. I created a spreadsheet to keep track.🤓 Thank you to everyone who played along — and for the DMs that cautioned me on a few titles too! 🥳 I’ll plan on a Dec. giveaway from the 1st recommender’s wishlist for the title that ends up being my favorite of the 12! 🥳 #bookstagram #dokbooks #igbooks #bookchallenge #12booksfor2024 #bookish #thecoloradobookies #ihopethesearegood

📚"How It Started" Challenge📚 Q: How long have you had your booksta account? What about you has changed since beginning it? What has stayed the same? Hello, booksta buddies! I hope we're all having as good of a month as we can, with love and peace sent to all of you. I turn 2 this week (but don't look a day over 1.5), and so to embrace my bookstaversary, I've decided to create a week's worth of posts that, of course, I haven't even fully planned yet (Me not planning? That's stayed the same). My inaugural one is a trip down memory lane with my first nine posts, and I'm calling this the "How It Started" Challenge. Basically, post your first nine posts and reflect. Oh, we bookstagrammers grow up so quickly these days. (I was tagged in this challenge by myself. If you want to go for it, be my guest!) 1️⃣Thankful for Books - My bookstaversary is Thanksgiving Eve, and I introduced myself as follows: "Hello, world! I'm Mikey, a math teacher (yes, math) who adores the power of the written word. Looking forward to many bookish days ahead!" See, nothing's changed. 2️⃣"Little Fires Everywhere." I still love Ng's books so much. I did feel "Our Missing Hearts" was a bit less subtle than I like, but I'm still a fan for life. 3️⃣"The Kite Runner." I was stunned to read this at seminar in college; it made me realize new books were still being written! 4️⃣"Apples Never Fall." I'd read more by her but thought this one was just okay (its initial 8.25 has dropped to a 7.5). 5️⃣"Winnie the Pooh." I read this again a few months ago! Also, I'm Eeyore. 6️⃣"The Art of Racing in the Rain." A student of mine read this and correctly predicted I'd love it! 7️⃣Classics! I do enjoy the classics and want to read more in the future. 8️⃣Book stack with background. Many have been posted since (many more on the horizon, haha). 9️⃣You know what? Some things are just better left unsaid. Much love and peace to all of you - with a little nostalgia! Thank you to the amazing community of readers who participated in the longlist reading challenge in partnership with @fictionmatters. It truly felt like half of Instagram was reading and talking about the 14 #AspenLitPrize longlisted books. Big thanks to @lizisreading_ and @plainsprose for running a book club, keeping people on track and sparking discussion around the titles. There were an astonishing FIVE readers who predicted 4/5 of the finalists (swipe through to see the winners). Many more guessed at least 3/5 correctly. Our jury did a phenomenal job selecting the books that many of you also loved 🥰 Since we had a 5-way tie, we’ll be sending a bookish goody bag to each winner! Winners - keep an eye on your DMs for more details coming soon!

🏆Aspen Shortlist Predictions🏆 Did I have time to read all 14 of these books? No. Will I still try to predict the ones on the shortlist? Of course! Note the numbers refer to my *predictions* and NOT personal ratings (I adored "Harry Sylvester Bird" and would place it second or third on my preferences.) (I read fully 1, 2, 7, 10, 11, 13, and 14.) First, some math. There are C(14, 5) = 2,002 combinations of books that could go on this shortlist. So, the odds of my top five matching are...not great, haha. (So I made 6 combos, of course! Note the probability of me getting any of these to match are a bit less than a third of a single percent.) There are five short story collections and nine stories. So, solving 5/14 = x/5, we'd expect 1.78 story collections, rounded to 2. If we guarantee 3 novels and 2 short-story collections, that takes us from 2,002 to C(9, 3) x C(5, 2) = 840. (Incidentally, I only have one short story collection in the top five). How I made predictions: "Calling for a Blanket Dance" is incredible. Most are in agreement, so I will be stunned if this doesn't make it. (Now I also thought "Harry Sylvester Bird" was amazing, but I recognize that many found this ingratiating, so it moves to the bottom.) "Glory," while at an inexplicable 3.76 on GR, did have its detractors - but it seemed this was more on presentation than content (unlike "Bird"). This also made it to the shortlist for Booker, so it makes sense here. "Different" contrasts with "Bird" for me; I found this one interminable and meandering to the point I DNFed it (for now). But it made it on a lot of lists last year, so I think it has a very solid chance. Not sure on "Consequences." Several responded they were gutted reading this, and I think it got better traction than "Holdout" ("Hajji," which I need to get back to, seemed close, and that might get in there. I had a wild card spot and went with one I most want to read in "Water," but I confess I did see @ktlee.writes' ranking, and she had this lower, and she usually knows what's up. But many others enjoyed it, and it has a long title, and I can't wait to read it! Let me know in the comments what your shortlist is! Mikey G

Coffee Challenge Thanks to @bookandbliss for the tag! It's the perfect prompt for me since coffee and books are my two favourite things 📚☕ Espresso - a book that was hard to get through The Song of Achilles was incredible, with beautiful writing and epic scenes, but it took me quite a while to actually make my way through. An Odyssey, if you will, but so worth it in the end. Cappuccino - a book everyone has read except you I've only read one Kristin Hannah (The Four Winds) and have wanted to pick up others. I found a copy of The Great Alone in a LFL the other day and did a happy dance. Latte - a sweet read In case you're new here, hello hi, my name is Heather, and my favourite trope is found family. Neil Gaiman writes it like no one else. The Graveyard Book is love, acceptance, support and encouragement at its best. Mocha - an emotional read I'm guessing all of these titles would fit the bill, but The Book Thief truly stood out when I read it this past November. Macchiato - favourite book of 2022 I narrowed it down to four for my wrap up, but I think I can safely say it's a tie between Notes on an Execution by Danya Kukafka and Migrations by Charlotte McConaghy. Are you a flavoured coffee person, or do you like it black and bitter? As long as it has some cream, I'll drink it flavoured, sweetened, or plain. Tagging a few others if you're interested, but no pressure 😌 #coffeeandbooks #booksstack #readersofinstagram #

🐐REVIEW: Glory - Noviolet Bulawayo🐐 🐴🐴🐴🐴🐴 (9/10) Here in Jidada, I watch the red butterflies dance around me, and then you realize you are watching a horn blast of words moving from page to power. When I tell you that this book is a surreal, genre-bending mashup of satire and nonfiction, what I mean is that this book is a surreal, genre-bending mashup of satire and nonfiction. With a book that goes for the jugular in its chronicle of the searing atrocities of Zimbabwe's past, told through animal eyes, you have to hold on. And then you realize Bulawayo expresses universal tenets of freedom and justice by being visceral, never syrupy or unrealistic. And then you realize there are hard truths here, punctuated by a rhythmic staccato and a whirlwind of voices that left me breathless. The shift in style might be too abstruse for some. I devoured it. So I exhort you to try it. And then you realize that this story just compels you to listen. It compels you to wake up to the blazing sun and listen. It compels you to sit in the hovering silence and listen. It compels you to magnify every whisper into a shout and listen. When those who did read my lines explain them to those who didn't read them, they'll say that history is raw and gnarled. The universe - and I humbly include myself in this - has a lot to learn. In a world that talks and talks and talks and talks and talks and talks and talks and talks and talks and talks, it is my petition that we stop. And listen. Is Bulawayo's turbulent, transcendent journey satire, allegory, nonfiction, or oral storytelling? I'm not sure and then you realize it is a panoply of everything, a delicate, resplendent swirl on a canvas even amidst heartache and pain. Even rage can be beautiful by the stalwart grace of God. So may action reign, in every Jidada, in this vast, swirling cosmos. This book is for you. This book is for all of us. 📚Read the Aspen Longlist with Me!📚 And look at these covers! Gorgeous. 😍 A hearty thanks to @lizisreading_ and @plainsprose for organizing an incredible months-long stretch of reading all 14 (!!) of the books on the Aspen Longlist. (Several of my fellow readers tagged!) Admittedly, I don't know if I'm going to get to all of these (the 9 currently on-hand are in the picture). But I can try to do my best!! I've read two so far: 📘"Memphis" (8/10). This had some gorgeous prose located within, even if not everything quite came together for me. 📘"The Last White Man" (6/10). The style hindered this one for me, but maybe that was part of it. Virtually every paragraph is a sentence, including one where a title character's first name is used 16 times. That's too much to get past in my book. There are definitely some others I'm really excited about, including - but not limited to: 🔹"If I Survive You" 🔹"Glory" 🔹"Calling for a Blanket Dance" 🔹"What We Fed to the Manticore" (what a title and cover!!) 🔹"How Not to Drown in a Glass of Water" Outside of the list, I'm also reading "Sing, Unburied, Sing" (amazing so far) and "The People We Keep" (not quite for me). Q: Are you a fan of reading lists? Do you see any books in the spread you've heard of or are interested in? Do I ask too many questions? Until next time, happy reading! 📚Sunday Shelfie📚 I was tagged by @sidekicksam to show my current #sundayshelfie! As you can see, the bookshelf is getting pretty full, but there are already plans to buy and instal another bookshelf on the other side of the living room. Of course, this means I’ll have to decide which books to keep on this shelf, and which to put on the new one, which is already giving me ✨anxiety✨. On one hand I really love this corner of the house, and the light here, so I’d like to keep my favourite and prettier books on this side. On the other, the light is eating away at the spines so I feel like I should put those books where the light doesn’t hit as much. Tough decisions. I tagged a few people in the photo, but feel free to show me your shelf even if I didn’t tag you! [ID: photo of a bookshelf filled with books, some of them standing next to each other, some stacked on top of each other. There are also plushies, embroideries, a tarot deck, a lucky cat, a couple of plants and a typewriter.]

Thank you @wandering_life_through_books for tagging me in the #fivestarpredictions challenge! These are all books I have in my TBR that I believe will become 5 stars reads. They are: 📖 Breasts And Eggs by Mieko Kawasaki 📖 The Middelsteins by Jami Attenberg 📖 Zee Nu by Eva Meijer 📖 Citizen by Claudia Rankine 📖 As intermitências da morte by José Saramago 📖 Nightcrawling by Leila Mottley I got these books already a while ago, but they are kinda first on my list of priorities and, honestly, it was fun looking at my TBR and seeing several languages there. I often complain about Dutch and how tough a language it is, and I certainly don’t read as much in Portuguese as I should, but I’m glad I have the privilege of consuming these stories in their original form. I tagged a few usual suspects, but feel free to join the tag and tag me in the post so I can see your choices! [ID: first photo is a stack of the books mentioned above, the following photos are individual photos of each of the books placed on top of the other books in the list.]
