Supporting veterans, those currently serving, and military families at MSU since 2015.

What does it take to build a campus where Veterans can find informed support through any door?

Michigan State University pursued PsychArmor’s Veteran Ready training so support would not depend on finding one particular office. Patrick Forystek, Director of MSU’s Center for Veterans and Military-Affiliated Students, calls it a “no-wrong-door” approach.

Patrick will join PsychArmor at MCON Health in Las Vegas. Come connect with people turning military cultural understanding into meaningful change and consider what Veteran readiness could look like in your organization.

This week on Behind the Mission, host Duane France talks with Patrick Forystek, Director of the Center for Veterans and Military-Affiliated Students at Michigan State University, about peer support, community, and helping Veterans succeed in higher education.

Patrick joined the Marine Corps because he wasn’t ready for college. After his service, a peer advisor helped him find his way—and he decided to pay that support forward.

Today, MSU serves about 2,500 Veteran and military-affiliated students. The Center supports them through programs and partnerships including:

➡️ VA VITAL, with a VA social worker on campus every other week
➡️ Veteran Service Officer connections
➡️ Business bootcamps through Warrior Scholar Project
➡️ “Veteran of the Game” recognition through MSU athletics
➡️ Support navigating service related disability accommodations

It’s just a snapshot of how the Center helps military-connected students get into school, stay in school, and graduate.

🎧 Listen to this week’s Behind the Mission to hear how Patrick is helping Veterans find community and success on campus.

Meet Noelani Revina-Gambill: An Army veteran and public affairs mass communication specialist, Noelani participated in Warrior-Scholar Project’s academic boot camp at @michiganstateu to build community and further develop her academic skills.

Through her boot camp experience, Noelani gained confidence, rediscovered the importance of self-care, and learned to lean on others to go further. 🤝

She describes the experience as welcoming and impactful, emphasizing how stepping outside of her comfort zone led to meaningful growth. Noelani encourages more women veterans to pursue similar opportunities and bring their perspectives into academic spaces. 💬

Michigan State Men’s Rugby’s Charley Fitrakis (Army ROTC) and Colt Gray (U.S. Coast Guard) presented the Michigan State Center for Veterans and Military-Affiliated Students with a signed jersey.

We are grateful for the service of our players and the continued support from MSU CVMAS.

Rugby is deeply connected to service, leadership, and brotherhood - values that extend far beyond the pitch.

We are proud of the men who represent Spartan Rugby in uniform and in green.

📣 New 15 for 15 Partner Spotlight Blog | Live Today
